Putting my 3rd member together and I was wondering if there was an average shim pack thickness that goes between the pinion gear and bearing.

I would like to keep from pressing it apart several times...

Thanks in advance

Get another pinion bearing (even an old one) and hone it till it's a slip fit.

That will allow you check and adjust and only press once it's dead on.

How do you figure what pinion depth you need?

Or I guess I should say where do you start?

Thanks for the shim info.

I'm looking all over this Richmond pinion and no where does it say the pinion depth

I always used the old shims frim the gears I was replacing as a strating point and adjusted from there.

As far as depth, I used marking compound and ajduted till I got a good contact pattern.

It should be mark on the back of the pinion on the flat spot closest to the ring gear center It should have a pinion depth etched on the flat area like 3.335. Not a actual number, just a # for illustratin purposes sometimes they're hard to see, twist it around under a bright light

Unless you want to have a howling success i'd seriously consider paying a professional to set up your rear gears. The gears will be shot after only a couple of miles if the correct depth and backlash aren't first set. Don't ask how i found this out years ago.

Cab, I found the number. It was very lightly engraved. With the shims I have I got the pinion depth set 2.765 supposed to be 2.763...

The original shim was .090 have .080 in now so I'm on the track

deeper is better(pinion gear head closer to the center of the ring gear center) than shallower, if you don't believe me ask your favorite
