Do any of you use this tool? The chains are too darn short to reach the side of the heads. The only way I see it working is to remove the heads and bolt it to the block but I don't really want to do that.

I can either lenghten the chains or pay $10 more for one at another store that has longer chains. Just figured I'd ask what you guys are bolting these to. I will not use an intake plate even though some have good luck with them. I've always bolted a chain to the back of the driver's side head and to the front of the passenger side head but the motor always hangs all crooked, figured I'd try one of these.

Why not just buy some longer chain at Home Depot or a hardware store?

I use the intake bolts that goes in the heads and shorten the chain as much as I can.

I would adjust the chains as needed and use it like before by using the end brackets (one on each end of the heads)instead of a bolt thru the links I have a cheapo Harbor freight one, it works okay It is probally not as good as yours

I use one like that. I just used the intake bolt holes that go thru the head like the peson above already mentioned. Seems to work fine on my setup.

I use it ALL the time... I pull the engine and trans
together and that makes it real easy... I made mine but
its the same thing... you would be better off paying
the extra 10 bucks to get the longer chains... by the
time you get the chain and chain couplers you would have
close to 10 bucks and you still would have gas money...
mine is almost as long as a small block.... I have
2 holes in the front motor plate and 2 in the mid
plate just for this to bolt to

Ditto!

No matter what you do, get rid of that hand crank and weld on a large hex nut that you can drive with an air ratchet!

I borrowed one to install my 408/727, it worked great. I did use longer chains with tabs I made to bolt it to the heads though. A great tool.

i've been using harbor fright's "top of the line" (pause for hysterical laughter) leveler, and after disassembling it and lubing, adding thrust washers, and detailing, it works very well. an extremely robust piece that needed a little attention. i think the capacity is 4000 pounds? chain without loops. very heavy chain that i bolt to the intake.

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

I looked closer at your tool, you can buy a link coupler or use a bolt to bolt the chain lengths together to lenghten the chain If you decide to use a bolt make sure and use the biggest diameter bolt that will fit between the links and flat washers so the bolt or nuts doesn't slip through the links

Hey be quiet Gus! But can you get me a part number for that oil pan bolt.

Jeff, I'm keeping the motor/tranny but the car is getting traded for another rolling chassis.

I'm not gonna get into any details til it's all said and done and the car is in my garage.

I use one similar to that, with some moditications. You can get new chain and couplers at the local Lowes or Home Depot, just be sure you get the right capacity. Get rid of that handle. Weld a nut on the end so that you can use either a 1/2" air or battery powered ratchet. Put a light grease on the thread and sitting the motor/transmission in will be a breeze. I'll give you one more hint (okay MoPar guys hold on) get the intake/head bolt lift plates from a Chevy motor. They are shorter have large eyelets for heavy chain. Get the couplers and attach them to your leveler and you are good to go.

About intake plates, I have probably 5 or 6 of those things and never can get brave enough to depend on the carburator studs in the intake to hold the engine.

I don't use the studs. I have 4 bolts set aside that are the right length, never had a problem.
