It will probably need some intake valves now. I'ld have the cylinders pressure checked first thing so you know how much work needs done up front. Be sure to change the water pump while you're at it.

Make sure you change the water pump while your in there. I see I was about the second or third to say something about the water pump.

How many miles does the neon have, just out of curiosity?
I have a 2001...
Changed mine 3 weeks ago, a PITA job.
The hydralic tensioner sucks to compress without a vice or press.
Yes odds are the valves are bent, plan on pulling the head. At the shop I never saw one that didn't bent the valves but anything is possible.

Ok, I'll 4th the water pump. Usually you can get a timing belt kit that will have the belt, idler & tensioner pulley's as well. Change it all while you're in there. You don't want to have to go into it again & yes, it probably bent a valver or two. If idling at a light when it went, probaly won't be too bad & can get away with a couple of valves & checking the deck.
Blown & Injected, need I say more?

You can get a belt/tensioner/water pump/idler pulley set from Rock Auto, or piece them together individually, like I did. I think the hydraulic tensioner is easier to set up, as long as you know someone with a vice so you can compress the tensioner. If you plan to keep the car for a while, you may want to replace the oil pump while you're in there. Chech all three engine mounts, too. And don't drop the 18mm socket down into the pass. said frame rail when you remove the engine/transaxle mount bolt...DAMHIK.

I normally post on here for my 68 Cuda , but ........ My daughters 2002 Dodge Neon lost the timing belt . Anyone in the Dayton - Cincinnati Ohio area work on these reasonably ? Thanks Donnie
I can do it. The head will need to come off. You can guarentee bent valves if it's a single cam engine. I've just done both of mine recently. Bent valves on both. PM me and we'll get together. I'm in burlington ky just west of Florence mall. I can come get it, I have a trailer with a winch. We can do the belt first and try it if you want but It's a waist of time and money almost always.
