I just got back from the coinop carwash with the drums from my 1971 Superbee. When I got home I noticed the drums have some factory looking red paint left on them. Now I remember hearing that cars with rally wheels had the drums painted red. When I get them powder coated they are going to be red again but does this mean the car had Rally wheels? (p.s I am not able to tell if the car orignally had them because the buildsheet is gone)

As long as the red looks original and properly applied you may have had some kind of styled wheel.

yes it does look factory applied. There are only bits and pieces of it and it does look factory. The car was coded for 14 inch wheels (if i remember f-70) but the car had its orignal spare that is a 15 inch polyglass tire and steel wheel. So what would the best guess be on what it orignally had?

Hmmmm - What is the part number and date on the spare? Why would you say it had 14" wheels - Is the original tire label still on the door post?

It has to be all 14 or all 15 - not a mix.

all I found on the wheel for part# were

before the valve stem
M1
0

after the valve stem near the pentastar
10

On the back side where the wheel mounts I found
M0
5

and

69

I hope this help I looked for a chrysler part # but there is none on the wheel anywhere

If the 0 is under the M1 then that is 1970.

Depending what way you are reading the other numbers by the stem it is either Oct 5th or May 10th.

If it is a 1970 date there should be a part number near that valve stem....away from it.

This one for examples is Sept 18th....the area in the oval is usually where the part number is stamped.

Better pic of the year - this one is on the back of the wheel. 9 = 1969

My 69 Charger came with the factory road wheels and there was evidence of red paint on the drums.

Did any other manufacture (beside Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth that is) paint their brake drums (other than black or cast if they even did that) so there would be color showing through the wheels? Which when you think about it was way da#m cool for back in the day. Shoot they just started to paint OEM brake calipers on production cars a few years ago because of the hot rod/ricer look and companies like Brembo started to. Mopar was cool before car cool was cool eh.

Working on my Duster last night I cleaned the dirt and black spray bomb paint from a front drum and there it was, red factory drips and all. This verifies small bolt pattern 71 A bodies had painted drums as well.

I have a set of Ralley wheels with red paint drips inside them....Apparently the wheels were put on right after the red paint, while it could still drip on to the wheel.

Take care,
Rick
