Drove it home from work yesterday, heat worked fine. Run in the house for a minute, come back out and head to basketball practice. The heater starts blowing real cold air, I look at the temp gauge and it was at 230-240.

Nursed it back home, for a few seconds it started blowing hot air and the temp went down, but immediately went back up and blew cold air again.

I just put a new thermostat in a few weeks ago. Could the thermostat be sticking closed? Water pump going bad? This is a 5.2 litre V8 auto.

Not a WP & too fast 2 b a stat. Air blend door servo intermittently loosing it's vacuum or fire if the servo is electric. though I'm not grasping how the eng temp is changing that fast unless it's not the coolant but the coolant gauge that's losing its signal along w the blend door. Holler back when you find it.

With no heat and high coolant temp Id say the stat might be bad. When I bought my 99 I drove about a mile to get gas.It was at 230 real quick.Just because the stat was new dont mean it cant be bad.Mine was the stat and the truck only had 18K on it when I got it.Rocky

It's a dry heat
high engine temps and lower heater output
99% of time = low on coolant +/or air in the system

I agree. A perfect low coolant symptom right there.

You HAVE checked the coolant level by now, right?

Do you have the optional rear heat? I had the coolant go low in my 2003. The rear heater core is higher that most of the coolant system. Air can accumulate in there and it is a b*@& to get out.
The FSM has a procedure but it did not work on mine. This was with a 4.7 so it may not be the same problem.

Agree its a classic sign of low coolant. When cool, pull the main radiator cap and add 50/50 as needed with the engine running. Then fill the reserve tank about 3/4 full and watch it.

Look for leaks. They can be sneaky. A slow leak in the radiator core may never drip if it leaks when hot since the coolant evaporates. White deposits may be the only clue.

Looks like you are in the "salt belt". The radiator on my 98 Neon died last year due to salt damage. For several months it had a slow leak with no drips. I just topped it off every month or so and couldn't find the leak. Then it let go like old faithful. "Radiators.com" fixed me up with a new radiator next day.

Coolant is topped off, I may just replace the thermostat again, and use my tool that sucks all the air out of the system before refilling it.

There is a tool made called the airlift it pulls a vacuum on the cooling system and will also tell if it has any leaks as it won't draw down any vacuum this will pull any and all air from system then use the fill part to fill it I would definitely agree it is an air pocket and this tool is the only way to get out the air without jacking up vehicle front end and hoping it burps the air I would not change the thermostat as it is working because as it cools it is opening allowing coolant to flow threw and blow heat Brian

If you find the resovoir full but still have the same problem it is air in the system, you may want to replace the cap as it is probably not sealing the air out when it cools and is supposed to draw a vaccume to pull the coolant into the system.

That's the tool that I have(Airlift).

Looks like you guys were right, I thought the radiator was topped off but it wasn't for some reason. I had to put a full gallon in it, and when I let it run with the cap off it burped up some air bubbles eventually. I drove it all night and ran perfect.
THANKS!!!
