I have a question concerning the differences between a piston from a 400 B engine and a 440 BR engine..

I have been doin a bit of research and have noticed that the 400 piston at 4.34 is a bit larger than the 440 piston at 4.32.

My question,
Is the pin location in the same spot between the two??

Do they make a .080 oversized for the 440?

I cannot believe that I can't find a .060 oversized forged piston for a 400 with the stock pin location and 9:1 compression that doesn't cost $800.00!!!

Trying to do a "Budget" build 400 with a 80mm B/W S480 turbo. First engine is a test to see what it will be able to endure..

HEEELP!!

That's because such a piston does not exist , especially in a forged unit, stock pin location on a 400 is more like 7.5/8.1 if you are lucky.

Contact member Performance Only , he's a WD for diamond , they'll MAKE you the piston you need .

$800 sounds like a custom piston. You'll end up an expensive piston on top of fairly short stock rods, a cast iron crank and a possibly thin wall block and 40_ cubes... not the optimal setup.

If you want to keep cost really low you could use a cast replacement piston and limit boost to 5-7 lbs. Then once you get the setup dialed in build a bigger/stronger lowdeck.

Or get a 451 stroker kit with a shelf forged piston from 440 source or another vendor. You would have a stonger crank and rods plus more cubes without a lot more money.

Whatever direction you take, at 60 over with boost I'd get the block sonic checked and don't be surprised if it needs a sleeve or two due to thin cylinder walls.

If my maths is correct compression height difference is around .145".

I have a perfect forged 383 crank, Eagle CRS6358CD rods w/L19 bolts. Stuck with the ported 906 heads, but I have a fresh set of 915 heads. Torker intake, 850 blow-through. Using a B/W S480 80mm turbo with 1.10 A/R and .83 wheel with 5" downpipe to dual 3" thru racebullets, 31"x11"x3" intercooler w/3" piping. Looking at around 8-850hp @ 10 lbs.. We'll see!!

lates stock 440s "smoggers" pistons works on 400s ( of course adding the 020 oversize ) and backwards, but compression height needs to be revised allong with gasket and combustion chamber capacity. They are around 0.100" taller. I think you'll get 0 deck height

But I have serious doubts about 080 440s STOCK KIND piston option are available

http://www.campbellenterprises.com/mopar_sealed_power_cast_pistons.htm

Check 424P and 406AP specs... but no one with 080 or 060 respectivelly in existence

KB240s are availabe in .060 oversize ( so the same than .080 to 440s ), but they are around .082 down the hole more than earliers High Compression 440s as I can read. KB240s on a 440 would work like the "smoggers" 440s

You need to have that block sonic checked before you go any further , if it has to go to .060 andthe walls aren't really thick enough because of core shift or ? , you'll be dollars ahead starting with another block .

Its at the machine shop now. I am sure he will do what is required.

Did you tell him to sonic check it? Cause if your gonna assume he'll check it.......................

Does this engine NEED to go out to .060 ?

There is no such thing as an .080 over 440 piston because the walls will be paper thin in spots at that overbore.

These guys are mopar gurus. I just spoke with them and he confirmed they will check it.

This block is already .040 over with a good ridge at the top of the cylinders.

Since it's already .040 over I'd want a confirmed set of pistons before going any further... Or I'd find another block, they aren't that hard to come by...

Agree. Dan @ Performance Only supplied my pistons for a custom 361 deal and was a true gentleman to deal with, and I would absolutely suggest getting in touch with him. Great prices.

Done!!!
Dan is Tha Man!! Thanks Again Dan and to all whom referred him!!
As soon as all has checked out with the block I will purchase the pistons & rings from Dan.
