Is having it powder coated the way to go (i.e., is the increased durability worth the extra cost)?
Guessing it will cost about $200-300 to have done?

If so how glossy should the black be?

for a 69 Coronet

I steamed cleaned mine first, then sand blasted it. Then invested in a can of Eastwoods chassis black. Total cost around 20 bucks. Do I think powder coating is worth it, heck no! Who's gonna see it?

Here is what a freshly sandblasted K frame looks like after I hit it with Eastwood extreme chassis black for what it's worth...

Powdercoating will last a long time and cost around $50. Get the semi-gloss black.

It must be, black is very cheap to do locally. Steel wheels are $25 each. 2 full length bumper reinforcements for my Duster, $20 for the pair.
Another place did my K-frame, motor mounts, trans crossmember, 2 pulleys, master cylinder support plate, and Road Runner bumper brackets all for $250, but that was quite a few years ago.
Find a place that does a lot of producton powder coating because black is always on hand and they will just throw your stuff in the same batch.

Does powder coating fill in the date codes? We have a lot of customers powder coat their motorcycle frames and completely fill in their frame VIN and then come to us I know that painting it the standard way (like the factory did) doesn't fill in the date code so I guess it depends a little on what end result you want. Can you have the powder coating put on thin enough to not fill in the date codes like on those hard to find H-Wheels

The K-frame date code, pulley part #, and the steel wheel date codes were still readable. I've found that the sandblasting is worse on them than the powdercoat. My K-frame was chemically dipped instead of blasting.

My friend just done his k-frame and rear end with the Rustoleum semi-gloss back and I cant believe how beautiful it turned out.He done a test spray on an old fender to check the durability of it and it shocked me how tough it was.Its not as tough as the exterme chassis black but about like the old chassis black. For $10 a quart I thought it was a steal.

Having mine powder coated in "Bk-05" Semi-Gloss black as week speak. Should be done on Friday. I'll post pics.

Blacks are inexpensive. The shop I use allows me to run my parts with big jobs they do for companies....so the cost is very reasonable. The downside is depending on the color I want, I sometimes have to wait several weeks until they run that color.

I don't think there is anything wrong with making sure it's nice and clean and then hitting it with a good coat of primer and gloss black, BUT I had mine sand blasted and powdercoated 'cause I'm lazy. The powdercoating is tougher and will last longer, but a good coat of paint is better than what the factory did and most cars aren't used as all weather daily drivers so it doesn't really matter all that much.

It's the normal semi-gloss/satin in a spray can stuff.

Actually, I've had really good experiences at Progressive Powder Coating, which is a few shops down from BWM. But..I have plans to have BWM media blast my car because they offer the use of a softer media than progressive does.

How have your experiences with BWM been?

Back when Don was running the powder coating I had allot of stuff done there, since Vince has taken it over I haven't had anything done, not that theres any problem just that I haven't needed anything.. I have a project thats gonna be blasted soon & I'll be using a guy out near Hughson that uses glass bead... Going in the front door at BWM can get pricey..

I've heard good things about Progressive P/C..
