A buddy played one on iirc youtube the other day. Might check several of the major cam companies' websites & see if they have a link

you need a dial indicator, a degree wheel, a solid lifter and a piston stop (tdc verifier tool). first, find tdc with the piston stop, screw it in turn crank clockwise 'till #1 piston hits stop, mark balancer, turn crank counterclockwise 'till piston hits, mark balancer, tdc is between the marks. now install your degree wheel and pointer so it points to tdc accurately. drop in your solid lifter on #1 intake lobe and pushrod, rocker and checking spring (or valvespring) and set up dial indicator to read off the retainer. now turn engine over untill you find max lift, zero the dial indicator. now pick a number more than 0.020 before max lift, lets go with 0.050" , rotate engine clockwise until the dial indicator reads 0.050" before max lift, write down the number on the degree wheel, now continue turning clockwise until the dial indicator reads 0.050" after max lift. write this number down. add the two numbers and divide by two, that's your installed intake centerline.

AAAAAAAaaaaannnnnnddddd ......while you're at it, since you have a nice light "checking spring installed on BOTH the no1 intake and exhaust valves, then re-zero the indicator with the valve closed, bring the engine up to say, 30* BTC or so, press down lightly on the valve and let it follow the piston "up and over" TDC AS YOU WATCH for the minimum reading on the indicator. The minimum DOES NOT HAPPEN at TDC!!!! Whatever that minimum is will be your valve--to--piston clearance, and check both intake and exhaust

Thanks for the replys! My motor does NOT have the heads on it right now. The pistons, balancer and roller lifters are also not in the motor right now. Can I put the # 1 piston back in the motor and follow the instructions??? Mike

With all these questions, I'd suggest having someone come over that has done it and walk you through it and knows the prcoess and has the correct tools. If you ended up buying a Rollmaster, it has instructions on how to use their 9 keyway set up, or call the shop you bought it from, they should be able to walk you thru it.

Dirtybee, Thanks for the instructions on degreeing my cam. Once I get the number how do I tell if this is advanced or retarded? I have the cam card. It has specs for a 106 intake centerline. Also, the sprocket has keyways for advancing and retarding the cam. How do I set it up properly with the sprocket chain and crank and why would it be necessary to degree the cam if the timing chain and sprocket already have it sorta built in? I have always had someone do this for me but I would now like to do it myself. thanks Mike
if the cam card calls for a 106 installed centerline, 104 is 2* advanced, 110 is 4* retarded. your timing chain will come with instructions on how to set it up for advance or retard. the reason you want to degree a cam is sometimes the cam, or the chain sprockets or the crank woodruff key slot aren't machined perfect and your valve timing won't be what you think it is. you should pick up the Mopar engine bible, either b-rb or small block depending what you like playing with. there is some good basic info to work with in those books, gives you a starting point.
