Starting a stock 273 motor from a 25 year nap and the oil filter distorted until the seal popped out relieving the pressure and shooting oil everywhere! I am assuming the pressure relief valve in the oil pump failed causing the pressure to spike until the oil filter let go?? Anything else that could cause this? Anything else that may have been damaged like bearings? Since it only went maybe 15 seconds before it blew the oil filter they should be okay? Seems simple but before I pull the steering linkage and exhaust to drop the oil pan to change the pump in an unknown motor I thought I would ask. Thanks

I'd get another $5 wix filter & repeat just cause it'd be cheap/easy & might not have to pull the pan to get at the pump. Unfortunately the reg may be stuck in the pump esp from a 25 yr slumber. What they said, I would put a mech gauge on it/preoil & see what you do have.

I had the same situation when I was 17yrs old in a Charger I bought that had been poorly maintained, I drained the oil out of it and replaced it with about 2 gallons of gasoline and let it sit for a couple of days, drained it. replaced with oil and all was good. Tom
I also think there is a good chance the 25 year old oil is most of the problem. If the oil is very thick, it will not easily pump through the passages and bearings, creating excessively high pressure, and may even break the pump drive off the intermediate shaft.
I would not likely pour gasoline into the crank case of one of my motors. But if I was worried about "sludgy" oil, I would be tempted to add a quart or two of Transmission fluid for a short period of time (one or two warm ups), as it will help thin the oil and has a higher detergent level than standard oils.

Yes, the first filter(unsure of brand) and oil was 25 years old. I am told it started leaking so another filter, a Wix was installed. The Wix also leaked so a Fram was installed. I saw the Fram let go and spray oil everywhere...it only had ran maybe 15 seconds total when the filter let go. Not sure if the pcv and breather are working but since it only ran 15 seconds seems like it would not matter.
I did not think about combustion pressure getting into the crankcase. Could that do it? Seems like it would be hard to get that much volume in the crankcase to cause this?
just need to know , why in the world would you start it with 25 year old oil?
