Does anyone here have real world knowledge of tuning engines at 11,000 to 12,000 feet? I have a customer in South Africa that seems to be having some trouble with a 572 hemi. Most of the advise that works here does not seem to be working there.

11,000 + feet??? That guy needs to get tuning advice from NASA for that sort of altitude.

Less fuel and more timing, is it dry or real humid where he is at? If more than 50% humidity lean it out some more than if it is dryer than 50%. Quality of fuel is a player also. Flying taught me that a 540 C.I. N/A airpalne motor will make 55% of its sea level power at 12000 ft leaned out to 75 degrees EGT rich of peak in standard atomsphere, less if hotter and less B.P., worse if humid also IHTHs

I run 7000-9000 corrected all summer and jet my 1150 dom. at 86's square instead of 92-94's. I also run 33* instead of 31* timing,

Actually one of the problems seems to be boiling the Trans fluid. I sent him a Dynamic 9.5 that I have used a ton and it boils the fluid in around town driving WITH a big cooler. With a 12 inch converter and a 572 hemi it seems to run around 185. But who wants to run a 2400 stall with a 572 hemi???

Todd, EFI would be the way to go. If not, The air bleeds woudl have to be closed up a bit. Does it have a power valve? If so, it would have to come in at a lower signal.

Hope this helps

you need more btu's! and double (or triple) your cooking times! we used to put our fingers in boiling water on our climbing expeditions! even here in bend (~3600 ft) it boils at about 200°.

With less atmospheric pressure water boils easier at a lower temp. Maybe your fire doesnt have enough oxygen to create enough heat/btu,s,

High atmosphere = way less fuel.

Small airplanes have a lean out valve you adjust the higher it climbs. Kind of like a choke cable thingy but instead of choking air your choking fuel. mike

pretty sure what you're running into is the main (only?) reason WWII fighters had some form of forced induction on them.

Todd, I dont know whats happening with your tranny fluid. I doubt its boiling as that would require a temp of about 800 + degrees witch by the way is its approximate auto ingnite temp.

My guess is its foaming up for some reason, lack of fill maybe While 12000 ft. is high enough to have a effect on A/F its not that high IMO to have any major effects on the tranny or engine oil fluids.

I could be wrong about that though. mike

The power problem is mixture comtrol probably to rich. The reason WW2 fighters had boosted engines was as Cab said at 12000 ft you're down to 55% power. It's really hard to dogfight with no power!
The bombers had boost to get high enough to fly over the FLAK.
