What is the plug in front of the Carb connect to? Thanks

The wire goes to the solenoid on the distributer. "70 and some "71 big blocks had a solenoid inside the vacuum advance can. When the carb went to idle it grounded the solenoid, this retarded the timing for improved emissions. I do not have a pic of the vac advance can but it is very noticable. By the way, you do not have the bowl vent going to the manifold vacuum port do you?

As stated above you need this vacumm advance.
