IMO,no

water will flow both ways

now... it has been said it needs to go a certain way to get it to heat properly

I would say it hottest by the thermostat and the pump is sucking cooler water from the rad

some valves care which direction the flow goes, so that might be an issue, but otherwise I agree.

That shouldn't affect cooling at all.

what temp is it running?

is it sucking a hose flat?

feel the rad to see if there is any cold spots, that would be a clog in the rad

what kind of fan and shroud?

got the right pulley with the right pump?

A/C or no?

condenser in front of the rad?

past midway on the stock gauge, will be hooking a manual autometer up this week.

hose not sucking shut that I can tell.

no cold spots anywhere, everythings hot!

new mp clutch fan and new mp shroud with new 26" radiator.

not sure what pump I have but all the pulleys are new repros from bouchillon for my application.

no a.c. and nothing in front of the radiator.

unless they are sized different (that trumps all), here is how I figure they should be installed.
The hose that water flows out of should be connected to the bottom of the core. This will purge the air better and easier. Also after the flow stops, it allows any debris to drop to the bottom. If you have it the other way, the stuff is forced by gravity and flow into the tubes.

I would check the water temp with a thermo to get an acurate reading

stock gauges are

my small block runs around 190 with a 180 on hot days and never drops

I just have removed the guts of the stat and used the ring as a restricter and drop it a bit...now it only goes to the 160-170 no matter what

put a spring in the bottom hose to make sure its not sucking flat and try it with a resricter in it maybe

maybe, its where its gonna ride at
