Just curious how many of you out there remove your rockers if the car is going to sit for any extended period of time?
Any thoughts on the affects of having the springs remain open for extended periods, lets say for arguements sake a couple of months or so? I have a car that sits all the time and we never do it and I have not seen any issues with it. Having said that it is a fairly mild roller with open pressure of about 750lbs.

I always take off the rockers over the winter but I've heard from a lot of people and engine builders that it's not necessary... but I still do it, just seems like a safe thing to do.

I was wondering this exact thing the other day. I like to fire my car up and get it out on the street whenever I have a nice day available to me though, so I've never done it. I also don't run a roller cam, so my valve spring pressures are mild compared to some of you guys.

I beleive that loosenig the springs was needed back when we ran the Crower white stripe and red stripe roller springs, the Mopar triples and so on because they would loose pressuree and break. I don'y do it and haven't ever on any roller cam motor I have or built in the last ten years ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) I did see 20 lbs loss of pressure on both the seat and opened on the set of Comp Cams 1.55 diameter that I used on the iron 906 heads after using them three years, I reshimmed them back to the original pressures and used them another two years. when i rechecked them they had lost another 15 lbs ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) I bought a set of PAC 1.570 roller springs that have more pressure and used them on the Indy 440-1 heads I put on that motor, we will see ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/1343795-scratchchin.gif) Not much help, sorry ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) BTW, Al did you get the intake valves you wanted? If not I have a set of used ones that I removed from the -1 heads bought from you.

I don't usually back the rockers off but I do try and spin the motor over as often as a can just so it's not the same old springs that are always open. I will probably take the rockers off the Stocker just because of the beehive springs. Don't know it I need to but I'm going to.

LOL, I guess mild is in the eye of the beholder. Some guys are only running roller cams with 600-650 lbs open pressure.
I can't answer your original question. I have always followed the old school way of taking the rockers off the race car during the winter. My street 440 Cuda gets driven at least once a month (typically once a week), even during the mild Maryland winter. I have a tradition of driving it on New Year's Day (Jan 1st) and most years the weather cooperates.

Even if the springs don't take a set from being left open for a long time, I don't like that I've seen the valve seats start to corrode from being exposed to the elements. I actually had to pull a set of heads and get the seats redone once for that very reason... highly "irritating".
This is the main reason I like to relax the valvetrain off-season.
