do you still have to engage it manually?
remember reading about having to push a button, and you could split gears.

A control box and all electrical harnesses come with the GV. It’s, plug and play. You can select to auto engage overdrive (it engages at 45mph and disengages when you stop) or you can select manual and manually engage the overdrive. I installed a foot switch (a head light dimmer switch supplied with the GV) on the floor to manually select overdrive. It works great.

Agree on the GV having all the electronics. I have a B&M floor shifter with the T handle with switch built in. I think it was designed to work a line lock but works great for this aplication.

I have heard of this option too...I think my dad is just looking for one more gear for cruising. I don't see him banging gears at the track, but just making it a sweet cruiser on the road, but having the bottom end grunt of 3.91's around town.

For what it is worth, I did get a quote for the keisler auto. It is about $4700 bucks. For that kind of cash, I would definately dig a little deeper and go with the 5 speed.

We are leaning towards the gear vendors. It seems like an awesome (and relatively easy) setup!

It looks like Keisler made an adapter bell to run a 700R4/4L60 style trans behind a Mopar. Those trans work fine in cruisers, but aren't that good for racing. The big RPM drop between 1ST and 2ND isn't good for et's. 6500RPM shifts drop all the way to 3600RPM on the 1-2 shift. I wish they (or someone) could make one for the 200R4 style trans which has more race friendly ratios; pretty much identical to an A500, with better packaging. There are adapter plates, but they don't look as nice and can cause tunnel fitment issues.

i had a GV behind a727. It works great. For me the problem was that the OD is not much of an OD. If i remember, .82. With 3.91 it would still sing pretty good at 70 mph. I now have a TKO 600 that is a lot more highway friendly. It is not quick gear changes friendly though.

You can cut the bellhousing off and use and Ultrabell. It bolts to the pump housing bolts.

Still pretty involved putting a 518 in a car, though, as they are really thick through the center. Pretty much have to fab a new crossmember and transmission tunnel.

The 518 is the cheapest route.
Our club's newsletter editor has an A500 behind a 360 in his 75 Dart. They whipped up a quickie transmission crossmember and it bolted right up.

I've got an Ultrabell to put the 518 behind the TT440. Instead of the hot rod it will be going into the Imperial.

The B-body installs I have seen pics of have only required modification to the torsion bar crossmember. You basically end up cutting out the middle part of the torsion bar crossmember and replacing it with a curved piece of 1/4" steel flat-bar. For a while I was gong to do a 518 for mine but I added up what everything would cost and the $$ adds up quick. Once you figure in buying a core trans, rebuilding it yourself. Then you're going to want the transgo shift kit for the 518 which is another 150 bucks I think. A couple internal transmission upgrades. Of course might as well get a nice 6000rpm governor while I'm in there, new torq converter intead of the low-stall truck unit, need the $300 ultra bell, driveshaft shortened, etc etc etc it does add up quick. Just do the math before pulling the trigger.

You need the converter, driveshaft, and some of the other work when using ANY of these ODs unless you buy a complete kit.

I can pull transmissions out of Pick-n-Pull for $100. I rebuilt the 618 (518 with heavy diesel governor) for my D250. It got all new friction materials and seals for less than $200.

Where are you guys getting thousands of dollars for a 518?

$100 core
$200 kit
$300 Ultrabell
$175 to have a local shop tweak my converter
$40 to shorten the driveshaft
$20 in material to fab a new crossmember
