I need a working panel dimmer switch for my 1970 cuda. Is the ralley dash switch and standard dash switch the same? How about the model year? Will a 70-74 work? Thanks in advance.

I am ASSUMING that there is a problem with my switch. I turn on the headlights…… the lightbar illuminates as it should. But, when I rotate the dimmer switch to adjust the brightness, or to turn on the dome lights, it blows the instrument panel fuse. With the fuse blown, the lightbar will only come on when the road lamps are on. Does it sound like my panel dimmer might be bad or are other gremlins popping up?

must be a back feed or poor ground. If the fuse is blown- how else could power be getting to the light bar. I ran a jumper wire on the back of the dimmer so that they are on max all the time- honestly, I think most people have them cranked to the max even if the dimmer works- they are not all that bright all the way up anyhow-

I would guess (it was like that in my case) that the dimmer switch is open and has no housing? You should see the relevant components (like resistor coil) when you have it out and can measure if there is any short circuit.

I would also guess that you have a problem in your wiring... instrument illumination should not come on with headlights. But first check the dimmer switch.

After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

All the wiring in the car is new, so there should not be a problem there. Also, instument illumination SHOULD come on when you have the parking/headlights/roadlamps on.

does not sound like a dimmer..seems you have other problems there also..blown fuse and nothing should turn on...road lamp wiring should not be anywhere near the light bar wiring...might be feedback somewhere...i have seen NEW wiring that was not color coded right/or has the right colors but installed in the connector wrong..the pins are not in the right place......might want to check that...the switches just check with a meter..

I had the same problem last year. I found that one of my female connectors at the fuse block was loose.

Was it the connectors related to the instrument panel fuse wiring? Or just some arbutrary loose connector?

I don't remember but I think it was related to the instrument panel fuse wiring. Just make sure all of them are clean and tight.

The lightbar is activated by the road lamp switch...So it is in fact working correctly with regards to the road lamps.... If the dimmer is somehow activating/grounding more than one circuit at a time{lightbar and dome} it'll blow a fuse...

You think that the light bar only comes on if you have the road lamps on? I struggle reading wiring diagrams, so I am no expert, but that doesn't make sense. I think the light bar should come on anytime the headlights are on, or if you have the roadlamps on without the headlights. Basically when either is on, the light bar should work. The roadlamps shouldn't have to be on for the light bar to work. How about the cars without roadlamps (barracudas)? Can someone jump in and verify this or correct me if I'm wrong? Thanks.

I should have been clearer...Your thinking is correct....Just confirming the roadlamp switch is the second source for the lightbar activation..So it will work independently of the headlight switch....
