70 Challenger 340, automatic, single points dist (was hoping easy way to get it going), I installed a newly rebuilt starter, new starter relay, new ignition switch installed in column (fun), new key switch in column, new ballast resistor, new positive and negative battery cables, new condenser and points, new voltage regulator. Will not stay running unless I hold the key in on position

Thank you
Mopar to you

I also put the key in run mode and used a test light at the ballast resistor and the light goes off when trying to start it so it looks like current going through coil.

when the light goes off it means either the current has found a path of lesser resistance so it doesn't wanna go thru the resistance of the (bulb)filament or there's no current & that's the case here. Start at the upstream side of the ballast & work toward the bulkhead (both sides of it) then inward to the ign sw to find the "open" in ign2 (crank) while someone holds the key to start or rig up your test light so you can see it from the inside as you crank it & take off the yellow wire from the starter relay to disable the starter as it's OK & no need for the noise/distraction & running the batt down & when you find/fix it, clean each end of ALL the large cables & that'll stop the smoking. Actually I'd start w cleaning the bulkhead(s) (both sides)

I cleaned the bulkhead box connections and all the other wiring connections. That was the problem.

Got it running

Thanks

"run" and "start" are seperate ciruits from the ign sw to the coil positive terminal. The prob is in the "start" side. See if you have power at the brown wire terminal of the ballast when the key is turned to start? If not trace upstream to its terminal in the bulkhead & seperate it & see if the brass terminal in the rear bulkhead half has fire in start. EDIT I spaced the part where it will start in park but not in gear. More info needed. You mean it will start w the key in Park wo letting off of the key slightly? Actually it should start w it in park or neutral but not w it in gear
