Do I need a small block oil pump gasket or can it go directly metal to metal?

Machined fit. Some overhaul kits come with one but they didn't have one from the factory. I don't loose any sleep over it.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

I like to clean the pump and cap mating surfaces and use a little blue locktite to reduce leakage. A friend had the gasket blow out so doesn't like them. While you're in there check the oil pump to main cap for passage alignment. you might be surprised at how bad it is.

Yep,

Look closely and you can see the scribe of how far off it was.
