Removed my damper from my 440 yesterday. It was loose on the crank yet the bolt was tight!!! By "loose" I mean I could rotate the damper on the crank slightly--about 1/8" of rotation at the damper edge.
This means I have two issues. The keyway in the damper is wallowed out slightly, (a little wear there translates into a lot of movement at the outer edge) I expect to either replace the damper, or weld and dress the keyway and reuse.

But---It also means the damper bolt is seating/tightening onto the crank snout instead of the damper. Yes the thick washer is in place.
Is that normal???????? I think it should seat on the damper with the crank snout slightly recessed.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Something is not right , the dampner is a PRESS FIT on the end of the crank, if you can move it back and forth by hand something is wrong. It's one of 3 things , either the hub of the dampner is oversized on it's ID, the hub is cracked(I had one like this and it did the same thing as yours) , or the end of the crank is undersized.

And the crank timing sproket floats unless the balancer cranks tight against it. So if the balancer was moving around, so was the sproket. Hope the crank is still good for your sake.

Thanks guys, Yes I agree that the timing sprocket would 'float' along with the damper in this case that I described, but please clarify--the damper hub SHOULD press tightly (from the crank bolt/washer) against the timing sprocket correct?

I did have to use a puller to slide the damper off, so I am thinking (hoping) the root-cause is the main bolt contacting the crank snout before seating against the damper.
I will check the length of the bolt itself to make sure its not too long.

No , the dampner should not move at all once it pressed on, I don't think there is much more than .020-.030 of hub past the end of the crank. The bolt holds it tight against the crank sprocket, not from rotating.

You will also need to check the nose of the crank for galling. If the dampner was moving there is a good chance of metal transfer

HEMI-ITIS has no cure.
My condition is fully BLOWN!!

Maybe the hub of the damper is tight on the crank and the outer part of the damper is loose from the hub?

Since you said you still had to use a puller to get it off?
