There's an old yellow 240Z around here that looks like a total pile. It's got a turbo Supra motor in it, guy drives it to the track, rips off 8 second ET's and then drives it home. I usually only see it when it's dark outside so no pictures.

Thats the problem in today's world.. by the time you add on all the required safety items, you lose the sleeper look..

took the words out of me mouth. that green nova that was in car craft a couple two-tree years ago was a sleeper! the cage was integrated into the pillars so as to be practically invisible. quiet exhaust. smooth idle. it had drag radials that were just big enough to hook it up (kinda). i think it ran low nines/high eights? had a monster nelson racing engine w/twin turbos, iirc. i had a sleeper in a previous life, no cage, skinny tires. an eleven second car back when that was enough to beat just about everyone. that wouldn't even come close anymore.

High 7s lifting...
That's not a sleeper.
i work at a race track and i see some serious crap go down a race track every time I work, when this thing was in and out of the throttle, and lifted early and went a high 7... I wasnt expecting that at all, the second time he came around I looked at the car more and still didnt think it could run what it ran, sitting there idling away with a little rumble to it. I respect what others think, BUT THAT IS a sleeper, sorry to disagree with you and you can still think its not, but drag radials and license plates, sure it looks fast with the obvious stuff on it for the times it runs, but if you pulled up next to it, would you think that it would run low 8s with ease?
So i'm not picking a stock looking challenger that goes 10's, or can beat up on mustangs and corvettes, still doesnt take away from what this thing is, to me its a sleeper.

The bead locks and funny car cage would tip me off!

Without a hood scoop and the way it sits, I'd think it was a mid 10 sec car so from that perspective I see what your saying.
I've seen 12 sec cars with funny car cages and bead locks... but I guess that would be the very opposite of what this post is about but those crack me up all the time. Like the guys that have to be towed all the way to the burn out box and need help with all the safety and getting strapped in and then they can barely do a burn out and click off a 10.90 pass
They've got the fire proof under garments, Simpson shoes, Hans device, funny car cage and bead locks and a 18" hood scoop...lol
