Was there Engine Assembly #'s stamped on 440's? A long # with the julian (SP) date worked into it? Supposedly stamped on the oil pan rail, towards the rear of the engine?
My motor-
cast 1-29-70
cast # 2536430-7
est assembly date 3-12
It does not have the # in question- but does have a capital "B" stamped there

another 440 I looked at
cast 8-15-69 has a capital "A" there

and another cast 7-14-70 did not have one that I could see.

I have heard of the assembly #'s being stamped in this location on a hemi, and under the heads of 340's- but not on 440's. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks

The number you refer to would be stamped on the pan rail extension under the starter, not all blocks have it. I've seen it on more Hemis than 440's.

A stamped A means it left the factory with .020" oversized cylinders, a stamped B denotes .010" undersized main or rod bearings.

The graphic below shows the Hemi info.

I can't remember seeing that number on anything later than the 68 model year on 383's and 440's .
