Ok, I think I ask all of the really simple (and possibly stupid) questions. Is there a simple method for removing (and replacing) the oil seal in the timing cover of a small block? Thanks in advance for the help.

Depends on the year. Some go in from the front and some you have to take the cover off and install from the back side.

drill at 2 places opposite each other ie 12 & 6 O'clock in the FRONT of the cover w a small bit (~1/32") halfway across the flat perimeter then use a small pin punch to alternately drive each side out the back evenly a bit till it's out. When you press in the new seal it will cover the (2) holes

ok...nevermind, i got the old one out....now, is there a nice method for pressing the new one in? I don't have a press....should i take it to someone who does? Or can i use a bearing driver to drive it back in?

Yes & get it started evenly w a light touch then drive it home w as few strokes as possible as each one greatly increases the chances of distorting it especially as the open face goes to the rear & there's not much contact area. Check that it is still even after each stroke & tilt the driver if needed. EDIT use your biggest hammer

Dont forget to put a little oil on the rubber lip.
Stay away from white lithium grease, they have changed something in the ingredients that has been burning up seals the past few years.
