At the low rpm you're going to be holding, I'd stuff the 318 in there. For some reason the 360 has never returned the mileage of the 318.

I can't say for 1972 specs, but in Jan of 1997 Popular Mechanics magazine had reader's surveys .. first one on Dodge Rams ... then a few years later on Durangos In the Ram survey, owners reported the 1.8 MPG on the highway better on the 5.2 versus the 5.9 V8s. http://web.archive.org/web/2005103120593...?page=3&c=yI don't have the Durango one bookmarked, but i think the MPG difference was smaller, maybe 0.75

The 360 has lower compression, bigger cam, bigger ports(slower ports) so the gas miledge will be even a bigger differance than the magnum motors that share the same heads with just slightly different cams and compression.
If you built them to similar specs then the differance would be smaller but the 318 would still get better mpg.

360 is bigger bore and longer stroke which suxs more gas ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whistling.gif) its a no brainer for MPGS ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) thats another reason the 318 is called whimpy, smaller bore and shorter stroke is less torque ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drive.gif) little hoter cam, small 4-v,headers does a 318 good and still gets better mpgs over a 360 stock or built A q-jet works very good on a 318 for MPGS also ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)

why build to factory specs? I'd copy hotroddave's super duper MPG 318 build, or if you want a hydraulic cam, I'd start with a magnum 318, use KB167's at 0 deck, and run a reground cam with bullet cam's HR259/316 lobe on both the intake and exhaust. http://www.bulletcams.com/Masters/HRlobes.htm

That is why the question asked is what would be the difference, implying that there would be a known difference

Because the 318 in question is already built.

I'd at least swap the cam to a lunati voodoo 60400, and the carb to a 4bbl w/a 600 eddie or a small q-jet/tquad...
