Who is running a solid roller in a factory Magnum block?
Currently, the truck(98 club cab Dakota) ran a 12.4 @ 111 with a 1.85 60' n/a. Now I want to turn it up and hit 10's.
So now that my goal is 10's I come to you guys for suggestions. I still want it to be streetable. But what I'm looking at doing is changing my current setup. I was thinking a solid roller, get the heads ported, be able to spin it past 7,000 rpm and re-ring it for nitrous plus some head gaskets that will hold up to a decent shot.
Current combo: 408 ci magnum Internally balanced comp .585in/.580ex 242/248 112 lsa 4" Forged Eagle 6.123" Eagle H-Beam forged SRP forged pistons .030 over, -16.9cc ARP head/main studs Edelbrock magnum aluminum heads 6.936 in. push rods, 1.6 rr M-1 4 bbl with 2 bbl adapter F&B 58mm tb, flows 1200 CFM 3800 pi viper stall
Race weight of a little over 4,000 pounds, 46RE with 3,800 stall, and 3.91 gears.
I can easily send my converter back to PI to get it restalled if needed.
What do you guys suggest for 11's n/a and 10's on the spray? Don't want to change transmissions or gearing, and no weight reduction.
Thanks!

First, and the toughest question is for you to define "streetable". We all have different ideas on that. Im my mind, I can tell you that a solid roller will take away from some of the "streetable" in your truck. A solid roller is tough on all the valve train, especially at low rpms such as in stop and go traffic, etc. There will be those that say they run a .800 lift solid roller on the street for years, etc... My advice? To run 10's and keep it very streetable???? Turbo or SC. At least Im following my own advice!

Port the heads and change the cam to a custom hyd roller with about .600 lift. Beehive springs and you'll pick up a bunch and stil be streetable. Brian

Its the 59* valve train that limits you rpm wise. Step up to a 48* R3 if you really want to turn some rpms.

That's what it looks like I'll have to do.
So I wouldn't be able to turn over 7,000 with a 59* magnum block even if I had a solid?

Maybe I was wrong, I thought there were some guys running over 7K in a factory magnum block. maybe not?
I'm down to try it with a solid roller. It's just an engine, if it breaks it breaks. No ones losing a life here.

I think if the head flow, cam and springs will support over 7k the 59* lifter angle wont be an issue, just look @ the w2 & w5 series offset intake angle and they buzz way over 7k
I was twisting my W5 340 to 8K, 8500 in the water. I'm currently buzzing my 360 to 7200 and it's still a stock crank and rods. Been together for 10 years now.

Am i the only one that thinks his current 408 combo should be much faster than 12.40's? Maybe ditch the 2bbl tbi?
What DVJcuda said. I probably weigh right around there.
So spinning past 7k isn't out of the question, this is what I like to hear!

I am hitting my stock 360mag with a 175 shot and it picked it up from 12.55 @ 107 mph to 10.92 @ 122 mph. Works for me
Your also running a far lighter truck. Gen 3's are way heavier then your Gen 2.

remember that truck is 4400 lbs
I think 4400 is a stretch, maybe 4200...
my 98 club cab with a big block, TKO-600 trans is tipping in at 4200 with me in the seat. his 360 with iron heads won't be that much lighter than my big block, but I think whatever weight he saved on the small block, he loses with the heavy auto/OD unit, so they're probably a wash.
Also, his truck is in full street trim. no weight reduction, full factory interior, full factory sheet metal, plus he's got AC, Power steering, a decent stereo system...
Dakota's have great styling, but they're heavy pigs!
