440 in a Duster, and yes it's a 4 speed. Even popping the clutch at 4 grand, the car will still lay down and hesitate giving me 2.10 60 footers! I'm using M/T drag Radials set at 18psi. I tries moving the card accelerator pump cam to the #2 position and it didn't help at all. Best time on a 60 degree nite was 13.16 at 106 mph. Any help?

I'm thinking he has the light weight fly wheel in
it and could use the heavier one to carry it through

Is it a 'bog' or just a 'stumble'? Do you have jet extensions on the secondary jets?

I don't know your combo. But when I ran 4 spd I let the clutch fly at 7000 rpm. 4000 seems to low.

If it bogs, and the timing is right, it needs more fuel.......Carb is too big or it needs more pump shot........I can leave anywhere from 1,500 to 4,500 with my stick car and slicks and it NEVER bogs even when it had 3.54 gears............

BTW, there's a HUGE difference between yanking a motor down because the flywheel is too light or the gear is too high and a bog.......

If you can't handle the truth, you're living a lie.......

I ran into the same problem when dialing in my car. I launch at 5600 off a 2-step. Turn it up. If it hooks...hang on.

I'm with DodgeCharger when I ran a stick back in the 80's in my Cuda I would leave between 6&6500.
If your bogging the motor because it doesn't have enough gear or power you need to leave higher or you will start breaking parts from the double hit on the driveline. If it's bogging because of a carb problem or something of that nature fix the problem and then you can figure out how high you need to leave but I'm sure it will need to be higher then 4000. Good Luck!

what gear? with the 509 you should have 3.91's or better. That cam likes rpms. My buddy had one in 440-6 RR. He'd drop the hammer at 6k and roll. Try going up to 4800. If it still bogs you might need to add some pump shot. Maybe add some timing too. That cam pulls from like 3800-6500.

What about jet extensions? Do you have them? Fuel could be sloshing to the back of the bowl and you might not be picking up fuel until the front comes back down. Make sure you are getting fuel.

I ran that combo for years in a 68 fast back cuda 4-speed an all, gear and tire size is most important.I doubt you have an engine issue.I had 4.56 gears and a 29inch tire, if you brought it to 4500 and took it down with the clutch to 4000 when the first amber light and dumped on last amber it would leave perfect every time, you will need a new clutch every year but it will work.I raced mine at Muncie ,IN like that for four years. It went 12.09-12.20 depending on the weather. It takes allot of practice on a car like that but it will work.

If I can find it I think I have a vid of that car leaving. If I find it I will post it.

God made cold beer, good friends, hot ladies and race cars don't spit in his face by pi$$ing and moaning about how life sucks!!!

install an automatic - the car will be faster, break fewer parts, and suddenly get more consistent.

Been there - done that - went faster

3.55's in the rear. Tires are 255/60-15. Shifting at 5600 rpm (after I leave the line)
