sounds like your voltage reg might be bad, or sensing voltage.
I have the 5.9 magnum in my 65 coronet. running the 2000 durango alt.
I am using the solid state single phase voltage reg.
I grouded one wire coming out of the plug on the alt, and ran the other to the field line of the voltage reg and it charges just fine.

Which voltage reg are you using? what alt?

that is a dual field voltage reg.
you wired it like a single field.
here this will help for the dual field vs single

should be fine.
guessing the brown raised area are the 2 field poles.

You should have a wire from the bulkhead that goes to the voltage reg. that should be a 12 volt sensing line.
splice it into 2 lines. one end goes to the voltage reg, the other goes to one of the fields on the alt.

Then run the line out of the voltage reg to the other field on the alt.
should work.

based on your statements you have it wired wrong.
none of the fields should be grounded.

one goes to one pin on the vr.
the other goes to the other pin and the wire from the bulkhead, or 12 volt switched on power.

After you have it wired up, following the previous post(s), here's something else you might want to look at as well. On my car, one of the fields (I have a dual field alternator, square back style) phillips screws that holds the field in place in the alternator, there was an extremely small crack/cut into the porcelin female fitting the screw screws into. That small crack caused the same issue with me of my voltmeter jumping up when giving it gas. I thought it was a bad voltage reg. Nope. After pulling the alternator for the $%$#$ time, I took a much closer look at the fields. Sure enough, there was a small crack. I replaced the alternator and never had any other issues - my voltage meter kept increasing past 14, then past 16, even up to 19 as I was giving it gas. Not sure if that will help, but you might want to take a look there as well. Good luck!
