73DartSport owns my old 73 Sport now, I found a smokin deal on a low deck 451 short block(400 block with 440 crank), stuck some stock Eddy heads on it and the MP 590 purpleshaft and went 10.20 with a Dominator and 2" headers in a 3050# car with driver. I had the heads ported and went 10.00's with a 9.96 in great air, then added a tunnel ram and went 9.90's with a best of 9.89. I never dreamed it would run like that, only hoped for 10.50's when finishing the car. Compression is about 11.2:1, pump gas on the street, mix of pump gas/race gas at the track, no transbrake, no power adders, fun car on the street, even has a quiet X-pipe exhaust system.

New owner went 9.77 last month!

From the early 90s....

440 4.375 x 4.150
.590 solid
11.2 comp
906 heads-home ported
M-1 intake w/gasket match
9375 Holley w/2in spacer

3380# 69' Barracuda, SS springs, 9in 4500, 4.56 Dana, inboard kit with 30 x 12 slicks. Street driven constantly.

Took it to ATCO once for a rent day and ran a string of 10 ohs between 133 and 135 change. 10.03 being the best. Air was about 1500ft IIRC.

Thought id bring this old post back from the dead. Because I enjoyed reading it and I am finally building a serious budget 440. Plans have changed. Now have a cuda and using a 72 440 shortblock with 440source heads, rpm intake, holley 950. I also have a comp xe274 cam but wanna go bigger. Anybody know how big of a cam you can go with a stock 440 smogger with pistons .150 in the hole?
This motor will be until I build something better.

We just dropped our budget build in the car last night. It is a 68 hp 440 with a set of 915 hp heads. It has old trw slugs 24 in the hole, steel shim head gasket to get the quench at 40. Stock rods and crank. the heads have had a little work done but nothing fancy. we put new springs an titanium retainers on them. MP 590 cam. We put harland sharp 1.6 roller rockers on. Victor intake with a new holley 950 hp carb. Hooker 1 7/8 fenderwell headers. 727 w/ brake and a ptc convertor. 4.56 gears. The car is a 1966 dart and weighs #3275 with me in it. We built this motor from the ground up and everything was bought off the internet either from craigslist or mopar sites. I had all the machine work done at a local shop. I think I ended up with about $4500 in it. I will post some times as soon as I get it to the track which will probably be the first Mo-Power event in columbus

Soon as I get moving on dart I want to do a stroker. I thought many times about 440 or 400 but you can get stroker kit for same as upgrading 440 0r 400.
