Looking at a 92' 5.9 out of a r/t, and want to put it in my duster to put it back on the street, but still race with it. Are these internally balanced or external balance? I have never dealt with an external balance motor, and want to know what is involved with the converter....Matt

External. Use either a converter with the correct weight and a neutral flexplate or a flexplate with the correct weight and a neutral converter. What converter are you going to use?

Any suggestions on a conv.? I have never dealt with external, so I need to be learned on how to figure the proper way. I have had good luck with PTC. My last combo was 340, 904, with 8" PTC 4500 stall, with griner Transbrake going 11.12 @119, at 3095#. I smoked a head gasket, and torched the head, and block. So I want to put this car back on the road, while I get my 68' notch ready for the track.

I've known Kenny for many years and used PTC converters as well. Depends on how wild the 5.9 magnum is going to be what converter it would like. Around 96 or 97? the factory began using a flexplate with the correct offset weights so the converter would not need any weights. The problem is the converter lost it's offset lug if I'm not mistaken,so that 1 bolt hole has to be enlarged to use the early converter. I'd give Kenny or Lane all your info and they will be able to get you the correct converter for this combo. We are using the factory flexplate on a 96 5.9 with a PTC 9.5" street converter on this dakota and it works very well for a mild combo.

AS mentioned above just use a flexplate from a 5.2 and you can internally balance the 5.9.

Basically what I'm doing as well. I have a 98 5.9l in my 72 demon and I decided to use the stock flexplate (w/weights) and just elongated one of the bolt holes to fit my 727 tranny with a neutral balance converter.

B&M also makes a sfi approved flexplate thats made specifically for mating the 5.9 to a 727 trans w/neutral converter. Comes with multiple bolt patterns for both the 10" and 11 1/8" converter patterns too. part # 10242

The stock 5.9 plate will not work with some aftermarket converters. I just put an aluminum headed big cammed 5.9 in a 67 cuda and was bummed to find this out. The lip would not clear the big bolt lugs on the dynamic converter and they could not be ground down enough to clear it, it also looked like I could not just tim the ring off with out significant loss of strength so we put in the B&M one. The old convertre that we took out worked just fine and it was the same diameter but did not have the big lugs, that converter was the same diameter.

are you going to do anything to the motor?

in stock form, they're all bottom end torque, and are pretty much done by 4800 rpm. you'll want a tight converter with that engine so you don't "slip" past the torque curve.

I am trying to find out what can be done with it. Not really familar with the magnums, but would like to know what it would take to get @ 475 HP. I would like to have the car be able to run high 10's, and still be able to street drive on occasion..Matt
