I have a 64 Polara with what I believe is a 70 B body 8 3/4" housing. I've been running a 741 case 3:23 Sure grip center section for a number of years with out problem. I decieded to try a 3:91 gear to see how it runs. I borrowed a 741 cased 3:91 and installed it.I drove it home from my buddy's shop in the rain. The trip was less than 10 miles and it seemed to work fine. A couple of days later when it quit raining I went to go for a test ride and the car wouldn't move. The drive shaft spun but the wheels wouldn't move.I pulled that S/C out an reinstalled the 3:23.Every thing worked fine.Yesterday I purchased a used 741 cased 3:91 and installed it today.Finished it up and went to go for a test drive and once again the drive shaft spins but the car won't move. I used Valvoline 80w90 sure grip gear oil.Am I just one unlucky SOB or am I doing something wrong? I should also add that both 3:91's supposedly worked fine in the cars they came out of. Any ideas before I tear this thing apart again and reinstall the 3:23's?
This would be so much easier if I knew what I was doing...

I removed the C/S and reinstalled the axles.I had 1.5" inbetween the axles. What is the difference between the 3:23's and the 3:91's that the axles would work in one and not the other?

Thanks for the info. Tomorrow I'll pull it apart again and check the splines inside the S/C.I guess I'll go back to the 3:23's until I can afford to buy a new center section.Called the guy I bought the 3:91's from and he agreed to refund my money.Stand up guy, don't know if he's a member here or not.I'll ask him when I see him.

Well,I think I figured out my problem. I think that the diameter of my axles is smaller than what the two sets of 3:91's use. I don't have a micrometer handy to confirm this, but I'm fairly certain thats the deal. Thanks again to those who replied.

What are the chances you found two 3.91 chucks that had different than stock side gears ?

All 8 3/4" axle splines are the same diameter.
