Even Shell Rotella 15-40 has reduced zinc now. you can thank the catalytic converters on deisels for that one.

Valvoline VR1 20W50 Racing is reduced zinc.

You need Valvoline NFS(not for street use) oil it is listed in Jegs but can be ordered a lot cheaper at NAPA. I run crude base NFS Valvoline 10W30 racing oil.

No matter what good oil cost it is worth it compaired to what it would cost if an engine is toasted

If you are doing a cost analysis, consider adding ZDDP plus to a good oil even if it isn't has high in ZDDP as it used to be. But I would still start with a good oil, especially if you have a flat tappet cam.

I will post my standard reply once more.In over 40 years of racing I have never seen an engine failure due to the brand or blend of it's oil used.
It's demise always comes from poor assembly, incorrect or inferior parts.

SHOW ME ONE THAT DIED WHEN USING CORRECT WEIGHT, CLEAN OIL ,GOOD FILTER AND NORMAL RACE ABUSE

Pennzoil 25/50 RACING oil. If you are not comfortable with the zinc content in it,,add a bottle of Erson's zinc additive. I have had no problems there.

Anybody had any oil failures directly due to lack of zinc? Is this another Freon scare?

I'm old school but I always work the base of my flat tappet lifters on some 2000 grit emory or fine lapping compund with light oil in a figure 8 pattern to give the surface a micro cross hatch pattern prior to installing them. break in lube hides in all the nooks & crannies until break in and them I'm good to go for break in with just a can of EOS and a pre-primed oil pump & system.

I did the same as Streetwize when I installed a set of used (yes, used) solid lifters on a different (also used) cam.
Been driving around for over 2 years now with out any issues at all. The cam will be replaced by a roller soon so this McGyver-cam combo can be put to rest.

Zalt ... It is formulted for older engines. You dont need any additives with this oil. Its the only oil I use in my 65 now.

My street driven 440 had a hydraulic cam that wiped a lobe/lifter after several years of running. Right after the year the oils reduced their zinc content.

IMO, only flat tappet cams are at risk. I think the rest of the motor doesn't need all the anti scuff protection.

The new Rislone with zinc additive is a good choice. I also use the Penzoil 25-50. But really you can use a lot of low zinc level oils and never have a problem. Frankly I believe a lot of troble relates to the foreign steel. Over the weekend I had to replace brake lines that broke after 3.5 years! They looked like they were under the ocean for a century. The best part was the tags were still good and readable. I had only used the vehicle one winter and I washed it out underneath every couple weeks. Quality goods from advance auto parts Foreign made crap!
