I'm replacing the shot tie rod ends on my 70 D100 and I can't get them out of the tie rod. I removed the bolts, but my picle fork is too wide to break the seal, it just slides aroung the shaft, so I beat it with my 10lb sledge, but they're rusted in place. My torcches are empty, so I was just wondering if any of you have any other tricks to share.

Try taping the side of the arm where the rod end attaches. The vibration usually loosens the rod end

Hit it on the side solid with that big hammer it is a taper fit so you just need to break that taper loose.

I beat the crap outta of it all over... it is rusted tight! I think I need heat or maybe some kind of lubricant.

Use the correct tool as shown in the FSM. It works great.

40 years and replaced thousands at home and work.Never took more than a few whacks by the taper with my hammer.Thats in the rust belt.I even break most ball joints loose that way.Had one guy at work that could drop the whole steering with like 3 or 4 whacks with his hammer.Rocky

Sorry, I don't have an FSM for this truck. I have broken some pretty stubborn joints apart, too, but I have whacked this thing as hard as I can with the sledge and it's not budging. The truck sat in the grass for a few years and everything under it is rusty. What tool does the FSM call for?

It's not coming out (as is). I'd get a narrower pickle fork or the right puller. You will use em again and if you bend something from overuse of the BFH you will not be happy (I learned my lesson on that). Good luck w it.

Put a jack under the tie rod, just enough to give it some upward pressure. If there's room to swing, take 2 BF Hammers and wack opposite sides of the tie rod seat as hard as you can and it should pop right out.

I have two sizes of forks, the smaller I use on tie rods, the larger on ball joints.
You must have the big one.
If you don't want to buy a smaller one, go to Autozone and get one from their tool loaner program.

Hit it on the side solid with that big hammer it is a taper fit so you just need to break that taper loose.

At the risk of repeating what has been said multiple times, you pound on the part through which the tapered stud passes, not the TRE itself. In other words, apply the BFH to the "other" part - the steering knuckle part of the LBJ (in the case of the outer TRE), or the end of the center link (in the case of the inner TRE). This is what the vast majority of flat-rate front end mechanics do.

Down to just a blue car now.

Forget the pickle fork. I hate those things. Spend $10 and get the tool for the job.

Tighten it up and the arm pops off. If it gets hard to turn and you think you're going to break it hold the tension and give it a mild smack on the arm (not tie rod) with the bfh will pop it out.

I've had one of those for years and I had no idea what it was even for.

Actually, pix above is Pitman arm puller. This is TRE puller. Important to use it only to apply some tension, then whack the centerlink or drag link with BFH.

Sears sells a pickle fork set ( I believe 3 different size forks ) that are relatively cheap and will do the job. Fastest way is a , but you do stand the chance of wacking the tapper out of round and a puller set is about twice the price of a pickle fork set.

Put a pry bar on it,could even be a 2x4 then apply tension and whack the side with the taper fit joint with a sharp blow from a hammer.Might take two people to do it but has never failed me yet
