Bought a 78 new yorker for 600 bucks. 43,000 miles! old lady car. anyways when ill get pics ill post them

But i have a few questions

1.The car has the lean burn crap on it. and im getting this weird gargling/boiling sound coming from the carb.its a carter i believe.what could that sound be?i tuned it and its a little better still kinda bad though.

2.The hood wont stay latched if i hit a hard enough bump it will pop up and be on the safety latch.what could i do to fix that?

3. What easy and quick improvments to do to make it get up and go with just taking crap off?like maybe the lean burn or if it has cats or not.

4. Also it has the flip covers for the headlights. Everytime i turn them on and they open i get a very annoying buzzing sound that buzzes, stops, buzzes click right at the relay under the dash. got another really from the junkyard still making the noise. So i unplugged them and it stopped.any idea what that could be?

thanks guys!pics asap when it stops raining!

I'll take #2 for $200 Alex!
Either the "receiver" portion of the latch simply needs to be adjusted up a tad or it needs replaced. Maybe this'll bump you up and someone can help you with your other questions...

You can swap out the lean burn for a typical Mopar ECU. You also have to change the distributor. That will give you a little timing to work with.

Remember that those cars had highway gears and 230 horsepower. Top that with the 5,300 lb curb weight and you've got issues with acceleration.
0-60 in 12 seconds. Quarter mile times were mid 17s.

Take a look here for a little info on them:
http://imperialclub.com/Yr/1978/index.htm

I like those cars. The red interior looks a bit like a bordello but they're comfy cruisers with a bit of class behind them.

The 78 was the worst 440 ever built trying to meet the smog standards. It ran the poorest and generated the most heat. The carburetor has a phenolic base trying to prevent heat soak into the carburetor. What you are hearing is the the gas percolating. Also could be the water in the heads boiling and being trasmitted through the intake manifold plenums. You'll also see insulation under the valley pan that was stock from the factory. If it's not there, then that adds to the heat problem

2.The hood wont stay latched if i hit a hard enough bump it will pop up and be on the safety latch.what could i do to fix that?

The mechanism that the hood release cable goes to is not fully going into the locked position as the the hood comes down. It's a high corrosion area. Lube the heck out of and make sure the cable is moving freely along it's entire travel length.

3. What easy and quick improvments to do to make it get up and go with just taking crap off?like maybe the lean burn or if it has cats or not.

Edelbrock Performer carb & intake manifold, and 2 1/2" dual exhausts. Anything else is a waste of money until you change out the desmogified cam and low comp. pistons.

If the headlight covers still operate after disconnecting the relay, it's your "HEADLIGHT ON" warning relay/buzzer

Congrats on the purchase!

My guess is the "boiling/gargling" sounds you are hearing is more prominent with the air cleaner lid off, and engine running? If so....

Many of these big blocks used an aspirator tube. This was a low budget (ie: fairly ingenious) way around needing to drive an air pump. Fresh air travels through a small hole in the base of the air cleaner housing, through a tube to a 1 way check valve, then to the back of one of the exhaust manifolds. Exhaust system pulses draw fresh air into the exhaust up-stream of the converter.

The air pulses make a distinct sound when the air cleaner lid is off. If it ain't broke, don't feel obliged to fix it until you remove the catalytic converter. It costs you nothing in horsepower.

oh yeah also what do you mean the "headlight on" relay buzzer? the buzzing is coming from the healight door relay behind the radio.are you talking about the one behind the pull knob for the headlights?

also i got my switch on the floor for my brights, but there is also a small one closer in by the kick panel. almost indentical to my bright switch? what is it for? i was thinking washer pump.

The "other switch" on the floor is probably the Search/Scan button for the radio. My dad had one of those new, I used to annoy my buddies when they would mess with the radio, by stepping on that switch and changing stations. I never did tell anybody about that button on the floor.

The 78's did not have this. That floor S/S button goes back to a earlier time.

If your headlights are on while the ignition switch is in the off position, do you get a buzzing>

"also i got my switch on the floor for my brights, but there is also a small one closer in by the kick panel. almost indentical to my bright switch? what is it for? i was thinking washer pump."

Never seen that switch on any 74-78 C. The washer pump switch is in the wiper om/off switch.

I guess you're right, it was a '77, but he bought it 8/77 so I was thinking it was a '78...Guess I've never been in a '78...I never realized he bought it used. Must have been a nearly new company car.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the 78 440(or 400 for that matter) is the worst 440 ever built. Internally it's no different than any other 70's 440 with smogger low-compression pistons. Just had all the emissions junk tacked onto it, all of which can be removed.
