It is hard to spend the money once when the bolth of us already have 8 3/4's done. So its twice for us either way!!
Let me know how much it cost's you to fix the 8 3/4 AND transmission when it breaks! I've been there done that and it's not cheap. When I decided enough is enough I got a Dana from a pickup, knocked out the tubes installed chrome moly tubes, Mark Williams 40 spline gun drilled axles, MW aluminum spool, MW housing ends and Richmond pro gears for 2400.00 3yrs ago. Of course you need to find a narrowing jig to use and do the work yourself! When I was done the Dana was only 3 pounds more than the 8 3/4 it replaced! You can still sell the 8 3/4 at this point.

where does a guy buy a dana? Any Idea on what they are going for?
Get a Dana from a pick up at Pick-n-Pull and have it narrowed, new ends, etc. You can reuse your axles if the same length my shorten them a tad...

I would love to sell it but who would want one set up like this. If your going this route you might as well go with a 60. I was thinking of putting a 9" in it but to buy a good third member they arent cheap either. Maybe the 8 3/4 is broke now and thats what killed my trans.
Gosh I really hate to and sure don't want to beat a dead horse, but...9" phords break in heavy cars, too. Three words: Dana, Dana, Dana.

I have SB 416 4 speed T/A. Slow compared to what these guys are talking and I broke TWO 8.75's so far. The money I have dumped in the 8.75's would have almost bought me a Dana. Now I don't race that car anymore and am finishing a mild 528 hemi car that I put a Dana in. I learned.

Sell the 8-3/4 while its still in one peice and then the cost of the dana wont be so bad
That is the right way to think about it. You might only get half what it cost to build that 8-3/4, but it will be a parts rear end (even harder to sell parts) when you break the gears, bend the housing, damage the trans sprag, etc.

Don't be a dumb, buy a 9".
I guess I'm one of the many dummies here. Oh well we all can't be geniuses . It amazes how much people blow about 9" rears. If they are so strong why didn't Ford put them in their 3/4 ton trucks? A good 9" third member will cost as much or almost as much as a complete Dana.
Sell your 8 3/4" and buy a new Dana, I got alomst half of my Dana cost out of the 8 3/4. I broke one 8 3/4, had to tear the 727 down to check it out, that was enough for me.

because a truck is a truck and they already had a truck rear, guess what it was? and when people suggest a 9" they are not talking a passenger type stock rear. it's an aftermarket race piece. like it or not the 9" race rear is the racers choice on 90% of the cars you see at the track.

I'll say 60%, there a lot of Danas where I race. For the costs I'll stay with my dana.

9" rearends are the small block Chevy of the rearend world. That doesn't make them the best choice for all applications, however.
1. A comparable drag style 9" is more expensive to build than a 35 spline Dana 60
2. A comparable drag style 9" weighs virtually the same as a Dana 60
3. A 9" runs hotter and robs more HP than a Dana 60
4. A 9(+)" style rearend built STRONGER than a Dana 60 costs MUCH MORE and the parts availability is MUCH LESS.
maybe so, but the dana is HP limited. the 9-9.5 and larger are not. for the average bracket racer there is nothing wrong with a dana. if they had a drop out center section it would be even better but that would make it a 9" based rear
