I am thinking of building a 650 hp hemi for my 67 Coronet drag car. Thinking of around a 4K stall and foot brake launches. I have a 742 case 8 3/4 with MW spool 3.91 gears and 35 spline axles and 1350 joint in the car now with cal-tracs. Do you think this rear could handle the hemi? I know put a dana in and forget-about it, but since my 8 3/4 is already in there thought I ask for opinions.
Thanks.

Last time I was at the track with my 67 Coronet (470, 727, 3.91 w/ spool, drag radials, no spray), all steel/interior, after I got home I pulled the 742 8 3/4 apart to check and make sure all was good. Let's just say things happen in 3's. I will say this tho, I was happy that it lasted as long as it did. But, called Dr. Diff to set me up... now there's a Dana... and the rest is history.

Spend the money once and be done with it, go with the Dana. The 8 3/4 will eventually break and will take the trans with, at least it did in my car. Dana has been in the car for 3 seasons have not touched it. 1.3 60's @ 3500#

We blew up 3 of them last year with our mild hemi....Oh, and one drive shaft!
Hemi's eat 8-3/4 rears....The fourth one is still alive under the car so far this year, but its not stock anymore, and two weeks ago, I bent all 10 of the 3" long wheel studs on it. Now it needs the 5/8" studs...
And this is a pump gas street car with a very mild hemi that I got to run 11.1 in. We put milder gears in it last week and went from 4.30's to 3.91's and it didn't even slow it up 2-tenths. The car weighs 4010lbs with driver. Its running low 11.30's on street tires, mufflers at that weight....

I would love to sell it but who would want one set up like this. If your going this route you might as well go with a 60. I was thinking of putting a 9" in it but to buy a good third member they arent cheap either. Maybe the 8 3/4 is broke now and thats what killed my trans.

I upped the power on my old 3350 pound 70 Duster a few years back to where when i brought it out that year, it ran 10.30's off the foot. It last 4 passes and grenaded, took the tranny out as well. Went Dana, upped the power even more, started using a brake, and never a peep again.
Anybody with 650 horsepower in a B body that makes way more torque than a smallblock should not even think twice about getting that 8.75 out of there, selling it, and buying a Dana for it.
This situation is definately( and i dont mean this in a bad way) an out and out no brainer

Bent all ten studs??? Maybe a torque wrench would help.

It depends of course just like many race parts, if you want all new with brakes the the price is more than if you buy a junkyard core and have it built it up I bought a junkyard core, Ford 3/4 ton pick up for $75.00, I bought new Moser axle ends for $125.00 with shipping, paid a local welder that had the narrowing jigs $125.00 to cut it down and weld the new ends and the old ladder bar brackets on it I bought a new Strange Engr.35 spline spool for it, right at $200.00 to the door. I reused the Strange Engr. 35 spline axles out of the 8 3/4 I had been running along with the complete rear brakes and I had to buy a pinion yoke, $130.00 w/ shipping. I have all the tools to set the pinion depth, backlash, press and remove the bearings and so on. I used a set of used 4:10 Dana gears out of another pick up rear end that I had sold to someone years ago that didn't want those gears and I did the labor on setting it up myself. Add the cost of the new bearings, seal and lube and it is still cheaper than a complete new one, the choice is yours. BTW, there is always someone who will buy your 8 3/4 parts, including the housing, if there not broken My car twisted the 8 3/4 housing up bad enough to rip the ladder bar bracket loose on the passneger side That happened on the starting line luckily, instead of when shifting into to 2nd or 3rd gear. The car did a immediate right turn into the other lane, and again luckily, I was a little bit late on the light and the other car was not there when my car went across into his lane I have seen cars totaled whern a part breaks during a run, don't take a chance on any parts if in doubt change it out
