1971 383/Auto - Holley List 4668...

Got the rebuilt carb from e-bay... BUT,I had to send the throttle plate back to the "rebuilder" because the secondary throttle shaft was sloppy and I was getting a huge vacuum leak from the shaft.

The picture below is what he considers the correct fix - basically just a piece of (copper?) shim stock wrapped around the shaft. It's not sloppy anymore, but I'm concerned about a leak from the seam. Is this a typical repair? If not, what is the correct way to fix this?

Nope, not a typical repair...Actually, I never saw anything like it considered a fix for the real problem...I'd consider that a swing and a miss on the "rebuilders" part and back it would go fast!!!...The correct repair would be to remove the shaft then ream the oblonged holes in the base for new inserts to correctly size the shaft holes back to a nice round{and original} size...And also, if the shaft is wore out it needs to be replaced also... Don't want to be judgemental but I see paint on every part in the pic an it makes me wonder if you got what you expected out of that "rebuilt" carb....

Thanks for the reply. To be honest, it was better than I expected for what I paid. Granted, it got the eastwood rattle-can refinishing treatment, but everything else looked OK (I took it apart after finding the shaft worn). I was more concerned with getting the right carb; being "rebuilt" was just a bonus. Instead of dealing with this guy again, I'll just take it to a local carb shop and have it done right.
