Hi all,
Messing with a 69 GTX and trying to figure out why gas pours out the vent line when I remove the plug. (The previous owner plugged it off and ran a vented gas cap. Problem is gas pours out the tank in the rear with that set up). What's the deal? There are two lines located on the frame rail under the alternator, one looks to be a little smaller in diameter and is the one plugged off, the other goes to the fuel pump. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for the help.

...The smaller (1/4") line is the vapor return line to the tank from a (factory)vapor separator (looks like a big fuel filter) mounted next to the fuel pump. The after market one's I used in the 1980's didn't work right & allowed fuel to return through that line, & I had fuel-to-carb problems. Not sure this is the same problem you are having. I'll try an attach a pic of the V/S.
...The pic shows that the return nipple that's not been attached to the return line yet. Where was this plug at, the front, or the rear of the return line.
...Pic's not showing, click on attachment.

Thanks hemikid. I can now see the problem is the whole vapor return set up is missing. To answer your question, the vent line is currently plugged off at the end of the line (on the front frame rail under the alternator). Looks like I just need the vapor/seperator canister and I'll be good to go right? I assume it's normal for gas to come out of the line when the plug is removed, no?
Thanks again.

...I don't have a sending unit handy to look at or a factory pic to show you at the moment, but i don't think fuel should be coming out that 1/4" line. The reason I say that is, the other end (I think) should not be submerged in fuel, but I could be wrong. How much fuel will come out of the return line? Also you have 2 other vent lines 1 short one goes just out side the tank up to the upper shock support, and another that goes through the trunk floor grommet (inside of car between the inner fender well's) goes over to the Passenger side fender well & vents into the frame rail through another grommet. If these 2 vents are not clogged (dirt dobber's etc) I dont think you should need a vented gas cap. Like I said earlier, I did run with out the factory Vapor Seperator, & I dont think I had a vented cap. Check your vent lines.

...Not a very good pic, but, here's the sending unit showing the short 90* Vapor return line. Looking at the float the line could get submerged.

392Charger,

That 1/4" vapor line was probably plugged years ago when the vapor separator was removed. The car can still function fine with out it. Running a vented cap on a 69 Plymouth B Body is the part that makes no sense. Every time you hit the gas the fuel will slosh to the rear of the tank where the filler cap is and leak out. This is a picture of my 68 Road Runner during the gas tank install. It has the same vapor return as your 69 GTX. With a full tank of gas it would probably start to siphon back up front. I would guess that the previous owner noticed that the tank either had pressure or vacuum when he opened the filler cap and put a vented cap to "correct" the problem. As mentioned in an earlier post, you need to trace out the vent lines from he tank and make sure they are not clogged. The vent lines are the two up in the top right corner of the picture (driver side). With the vents working properly you should have no need for a vented filler cap and eliminate the gas leaks. The vent tubes are rather small, clear the ends with a jewelers screwdriver or a big paper clip, follow with a short blast of air.

Good Luck!
