I'm swapping out the 3 inch studs on my new Strange axles for some 2 inch ones. I need to know what if any thread lock I should put on them? Anyone know what they should be torqued to? Thanks!

Edit: These are screw in studs.

I'm not sure of which grade studs your using but my trailer axles with 1/2 studs call for 90 to 120 ft. lbs on the nuts, the Mopar service manuals call for 55 ft. lbs on there stock axle studs. Maybe split the differences and use 75 ft. lbs and have the back of the stud tack welded to the backside of the axle also

Thanks! I tried to loosen the 3 inchers with a 1/2 ratchet and they wouldn't budge. I wonder if they are thread locked from Strange?

Since no one seems to know or care, I'll contact Strange in the morning.

I don't think the studs need to be torqued, only tightened. The stud is torqued (loaded or stretched - depending on how you want to look at it) with the lug nut. You just need to be sure there is complete thread engagement into the axle flange. For maximum hold, there should be a few threads extending out the back of flange. Since, if I remember correctly, the strange kit has ny-lock nuts on the back, there is more than enough thread through the flange. If there is no locking nut, then yes, I would use a lock-tight to secure the stud to the flange.

With 5/8" studs and my Weld Pro-Stars I use 135 ft.lbs on the lug nuts.

Now we're gettin somewhere.

I'm SURE that the new studs need to be torqued, I just don't know to what ft/lbs.

I'm not sure what you mean by thread engagement. The studs are like 2 inch bolts that have to be threaded in from the back. As far as leaving threads extending from the back?!? If the stud is torqued, the head will be against the back of the flange when tight. There are no washers or nylock nuts.

This is what my axles look like now.

This is what I'm trying to install.

Brian, not trying to be a smart azz, but why change them instaed of cutting them off I have cut and trimmed many wheel studs off with a hacksaw and or a little 4 inch grinder or 4 inch cut off wheel , Make sure and run a thread chaser die over them when done

No offense taken. Strange sent me new studs, I'm going to install them and sell the unused 3" studs.

yep you are supposed to use the red thread locker on them - just make sure you clean them up after it dries

OK - Those are not "studs", they are bolts. I was assuming you had actual studs, which are threaded at both ends. Sorry for the confusion.

Even with your bolts, the torque is not critical, as there is not clamping force. getting them tight should be all that is required. If you really need a number, I would say you would be safe at 75-95 ft.lbs on 5/8" bolts.

The load is imposed on the bolt from the lug nut end, which should be in the 135-ft.lb. range.

The kit I have has actual studs with nuts on the back side of the axle flange to keep the studs from backing out.

Cool! Sorry for the confusion. I guess I know the difference between studs and bolts, but didn't articulate it well!!

So, should I be having a hard time getting the Strange installed bolts out of the flange?!? Do I need to take them to work and hit them with the impact? They wouldn't come loose with me on the 1/2" drive ratchet and my buddy holding a wooden dowel to keep the axle from spinning.

Sounds like its time for a bigger breaker bar (and a vise}, or a 1/2" impact gun.

once you get the old bolt's out then screw the new ones in untill you have the head of the bolt approxamately the thickness of the axel flange away from the back side of the flange then add a drop of locktite 272 between the flange and head of the bolt then finish screwing the bolt's down to the flange and torque to 75ft lbs and you are good to go, this saves you from having to clean the threads of loctite after you are done, that's how I did mine back when I ran the 1/2 bolts in my moser axels.

I don't use loc-tite, but it wouldn't hurt.

Hold the axles vertically in a press as you torque the studs to 85 lbs.
