I'm thinking of running a K&N air filter. I've heard many opinions from people I've been around. What are the pros and cons of these filters?

Well, I put one on my 03 Ram.
Pros: Never buy another filter

Cons: 0% improvement in MPG or HP
Have to buy a cleaning/oiling kit to service
Cost

I would not do it again. All the claims that I see are bogus. If there is any improvement, its so minute, you will never tell.

Not K&N but Summits brand.I do have K&N in the Harleys.Mine has been on for 10 years no problems. The bikes have been on longer than that and no problems except I dont clean them as often as I should.I went probally 50K on one before I cleaned it.Rocky

I've read several articals that pretty much say they do not increase performance or filter better. They are reusable but I find them to be a pain. I have switched back to all paper elements. Just make sure you get one the flows enough. usually a good 3" paper is good enough.

Put in a new K&N and went on a 1100 mile trip. seemed hard on gas. On return trip home switched back to paper filter, same route and same weather conditions other than head wind on the way home. Mileage improved with the paper filter by using close to 1 tank of gas less on the way home.

People I know who have used the reusable filters and done oil analysis have found the silica content is way up and have gone back to conventional paper filters. As others have said there's no upside to performance or economy so unless you like less filtering ability and cleaning instead of replacing filters I don't see the point. I have a K$N sitting in a box unused, next time I see it it'll be in the trash.

They let more dust in the engine than a paper filter and the power difference wasn't noticable. I went back to using the NAPA Gold paper filters.

Wow. 5 out of 6 negative comments to the use of the K&N. People I've talked with pretty much say the same thing. Guess I'll stick to paper filters that I get from NAPA. Thanks for the replies.

Volunteers pooled their money and did the best tests of KN style and conventional filters several years ago:

In particular
look at the 'Dust Loading' graph:

Saw several billboards along I-5 last week advertising their filters for "big rigs" available now. I'd be interested to see if any of the big fleet operators bite. Doubt it. What's the Army use on their stuff over in the desert?

Which one I use depends on the filter housing chosen, how everything is set up and what I will use it for.

The GTX has an open hood scoop and the carb/air cleaner is sealed to the scoop. Paper filters do not hold up. They disintigrate and fall apart in my car quite fast, especially when driven in any rain which happens more than I'd like. K&N can take the abuse without falling apart.

In a 14" open element situation without a scoop I have also had bad luck with paper filters because the fan is constantly throwing junk at them. K&N works much better for me in that situation.

In an "unsilenced" factory style air cleaner or snorkel air cleaner, I have had good luck with paper because the stock housing shields the element from damage as intended. No problems with KN either in that application but haven't seen any advantage to it.

In a late model fi application like my 03 5.7 truck, I've had good luck with paper OEM, oiled K&N, and aftermarket dry media....they have all worked well and I never had a problem with any of them.

They're not using K&N, that's for sure. Many "big rigs" use Donaldson air filters with nanofiber synthetic media as does the United States Military. How can you get nonofiber air filter media for your car?

Super efficient air and oil filtration is part of the picture when it comes to extending oil change intervals. Again, don't try that with a K&N...

i saw that. i put them on my DD years ago, but might switch back to a plain paper filter because this graph. they do save $$$ though - each paper filter runs ~$15 & the k&n was $30, so they quickly paid for themselves.

Pros, They flow clean air good. Cons, They flow dirty air good too, when the oil wicks down from gravity.

I've had a K&N cold air intake kit on my Dakota R/T for 125,000 miles so far. I have cleaned the filter twice. Just went on a 1400 mile trip a few weeks ago and hauling my Ninja the truck averaged 18 mpg still. Not bad at 165,000.

I kept track when I put it on and the truck got about 1 mpg better, and picked up .1 and 1 mph out at RT66.

I believe the gain had more to do with getting rid of the factory piece of crap airbox more than the filter itlself.

this has been an interesting topic that I too have been curious as no official tests have been able to prove that the K&N filters are better and improve hp/mpg.

According to the graph (if I'm reading this right) your best bet would be to go with the acdelco filter? or the amsoil?
