Here's the chopped 57 I mentioned in the other thread. I think it's a great custom.

Agreed! More pix here:

http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_car_p...an_57_chrysler/

The Chrysler was give a two-page feature in the March 1964 issue of Rod & Custom magazine. When I can talk my wife into clearing her pile of stuff off our scanner, I'll see if I can scan the two pages.

Edit: Well, I just took another look at the pix in the link. First one is a scan of the March 1964 R&C two-page feature. Duh. . . .

Thanks, I had never seen those before.

I'd like to know what ever became of the car. I'd even further like to buy it....if it were available at a very reasonable price!

I always wonder how well these old customs hold up. It seems they'd be prone to a lot of corrosion.

great thread on this car on the HAMB.
It's still alive, owned by a record producer in LA who doesn't take it (or the others in the collection) out much.

Maybe its on there.

So the bartender says to the horse " Gee, Why the long face?"

Thanks for the added links...I never knew so much existed on this car and figured it had wound up scrapped at some point.

For my tastes, I would rather have that car than any E body.

I've got that article too and have always loved that car. I agree the Chryslers of those years were just awesome and a 57 Chevy looks like dog crap in comparison. I wonder how many of those windshields they broke before they got one shortened? Not many modified cars still look cool after 50 years!

The inman Chrysler is one of the best customs in my book. All the lines are just spot-on.
The only thing I can't really learn to like is the molded edge over the licenseplate.

Just turning down the torsion bars and put loweringblocks between the axle and springs.

I did the same on my '57. I used 3" lowering blocks on mine.

I agree, the hood over the plate is something I would have avoided. I also would have done the tailight lenses taller.

The article says they modified the control arms.

No offense but the lowering blocks are kinda generic and you don't have adequate clearance between the frame rail and the top of the axle tube.

FYI, the Chrysler got an updated 2-page feature in the December 1991 issue of Rod & Custom with then-current pix.

No info about how it was lowered, though.

None taken
I speak from experience when I say the axle-tube isn't the problem when lowering it this way (is there any other way without going to an independent rearsuspension?).
The main problem is the rear axle snubber which is in very close to full contact with the body. This causes you to feel almost every bump in the road.

If you remove the snubber, then the driveshaft will hit the body when accelerating or on good bumps.
The axle tubes only hit the framerail rubbers when cornering hard.

To do a 'good' lowering, the driveshaft tunnel's sheetmetal should be cut open and made higher with a fillerplate.

Stiffer leafsprings are usually a great help aswell after a car has been lowered.
I still plan on adding a couple of leafs on the '57 'cause it bottoms out to easily to my taste.

could you just lower it 2"'s instead of 3?

2" lowering is possible also, but I like the car to be as low as possible as a 1st rule, but also still be normally usable on the street.
Perhaps the 'best' solution would be to install air bags in addititin to the leafsprings to lift the car up when it's needed.

Yeah, I meant not enough room between the bumper and frame.

Anyway, at this point in time, I am insanely jealous of anyone with a '57 Chrysler so it's best we not discuss matters any further!

I've been watching what appears to be a rustfree 57 2dr ht NY in town here for about 4 years. I'm tempted to go see if it's for sale but I'm scared it will be. Then today in my travels I found a yard with 4 of these era 2 dr HT Dodges. This guy is obviously building another one of these in the shop. I think I'll just have to go up there on the weekend and meet the guy.
I love thee lines on these beasts.

Well, why not go ahead and ask?
If you don't 'want' it, I'm sure someone would like to get this gem back on the road!
