I am doing a 71 Chevy pu for a lady and got a reproduction tach to go in the factory hole. I'm sure I have it hooked up right, one wire to the - side of the coil and a hot switched lead exactly as it is marked on the back. The problem is it is showing 3200 rpm at idle, when in reality it is around 800.

Is there any thing I'm missing here? I have hooked up plenty of tachs over the years, but never came across this. There is no external adjustment on the tach. I wanted to get this dash buttoned up, and don't really want to have to send it back. Anyone have any ideas?

My mistake! I just went out and popped the cap and it looks like some electronic ignition as been added, Pertronics maybe? I assumed it was points because it was not the big HEI type distributor.
So, how would I hook this up?

Should connect the same. Pull the tach and see if there is a switch in the circuit board. 4-6-8.

I took it apart and there is no provision for the amount of cylinders.
I've been on hold with Pertronics for almost 20 minutes. Hopefully I can get through with them soon.

Are you sure you're on the neg side of the coil?

Definitely.
Man, Pertronics is impossible to get ahold of with the worst recorded music ever!

Hey Don.
I think when you get ahold of the Pertronics company they may tell you that your going to need a "tach adapter" to work with their ignition system.
Just like when i had the MSD system on my old 71 Cuda. It need a tach adapter to work correctly with the factory tachometer.
I will bet it's probably the same situation that your going through now.

I was wondering about that Jim. I think I have a new MSD tach adapter in the shed I was going to use on the GTX a few years ago, but didn't need it.
