Hey guys... can anyone tell me what the correct paint style & finish is for my 1971 Challenger R/T's dual snorkel air cleaner housing? I was under the impression that it was supposed to be a special "crinkle" type finish in black. If this is correct, then isn't there a process involved which includes first painting the housing, then actually putting the pieces in your oven to make it crinkle/krinkle up? Dale

Do you really need to put the part in the oven to make it crinkle, I guess I need to read the spray can info again? Could you use a heat gun and get similar results if it does need heat to crinkle? The last time I used the oven for car parts my wife hit the ceiling and the house didn't clear out for days
Did a search and found this thread, maybe some info there but didn't read through all of the posts. BTW I used Krylon and it wrinkled on its own without heat http://www.finishing.com/0400-0599/409.shtml

I had mine powdercoated with the wrinkle finish and it came out great, wasn't expensive either.
That makes it sort of durable if you work on your car and take it on and off a lot.
And I had mine powercoated with the rubber snorkle vacuum motors and they still work fine.

The air cleaner on my '70 Road Runner is not wrinkle finish. It is more of a suede finish. Same on my '71 Charger R/T.
Was your original air cleaner wrinkle?
My original air cleaner is so worn, that is almost looks as though the wrinkle that's left could just be from the years of handling since its only in a couple small areas here and there. But after talking to few people local on what is supposed to be on my `71 car... yes, they are all confident that wrinkle finish is correct to my car's air cleaner.

Should be wrinkle finish . To make sure the wrinkle process comes out even , shake can Very well , apply 3 medium coats (about 2 minutes between coats)then I recomend putting it in the oven at about 400 degrees for about 10 minutes . Perfect results every time.

Thanks for the step-by-step, Greg. Sounds easy enough to follow except for one thing....the oven part. We have your regular free-standing kitchen oven and while I haven't compared the actual interior capacity of this appliance, I'm somehow thinking that dual snorkel housing is going to be too big? Only one way to find out I guess! (the wife will love me even more for this one)

An outside gas grille is also a nice place to bake the finish.

I just looked at ONE 71 dual snorkle today. Not glossy finish but has some texture, but not as pronounced and uniform as a powdercoat wrinkle. I think there is a lot of variblity in the amount of texture between air cleaners and it varies on certain areas of the air cleaner itself. That's just one air cleaner.

i wish the best of luck if you use the can stuff. It has good results but after trying the powdercoat wrinkle, the results are second to none. The coating is rock hard and it looks OE as well for 1970. The best thing to do is have it powdercoated first, carefully tape it, then apply a low lustre/satin black to the inside of the air cleaner. I did use the can stuff on the sensor pods because the curing oven for PC gets pretty hot and did not want to risk damaging anything. Here are the pics of my dual snorkel air cleaner after PC. The wrinkle seemed to vary from year to year.
Looks AWESOME!

We do it all of the time here at work. The trick is some quick coats to cover it & place several heat lamps all around it & let it bake if you don;t have access to an oven. Wrinkles perfect everytime.

My opinion. Save yourself the headache and have it powder coated. The results are awesome and it does not cost that much. I have had 3 done this year along with Hemi valve covers and they came out beautiful.
If you dont believe me, you are hearing it again from Jules. Another reason is that the can stuff wears and fades over time.
