I was wondering if you guys will think this will work. I am painting the dash for my 67 Dart Chestnut brown. Since the correct textured factory paint is out of my budget, do you think spraying the color over Rustoleum textured paint as a base will give me something close? My paint shop can mix the brown, no problem but due to Commiefornia, the additive for the texture is no longer available.
Thoughts???

Something to try if you're not trying to do a concourse restoration. Don't reduce the paint as much, you'll get a slight texture that might replicate the factory texture that you're after. Basically you would be spraying a little on the "dry" side. Instead of reducing 50/50, try 55% paint, 45% reducer.

You may want to try this if you are on budget. Rust-oleum Fine Textured Black. # 7220 Black.

Worked pretty well for me. Played around with it a little before I found a technique I was happy with. I'm pleased with the way my Challenger dash turned out.

If the Rustoleum isn't catalyzed I wouldn't paint ANYTHING over it.

I've done mine like Dave Watt has suggested. I use flattened catalyzed enamel and dry spray with an HVLP gun. Spray the first coat slick for coverage and then dry spray to the texture you want. Don't forget to spray the glove box door/ashtray etc at the same time so the textures match.

Acrylic lacquer would also work, but I bet you can't buy that in Cali.

Very dry, lots of gun distance, under-reduced but not quite to the point where it comes out of the gun like spaghetti. Experiment with air pressure so it doesn't lay down or flow out. Probably use a "hot" reducer. You kind of "fog" it on. Mixing in flattening-agent in paste form will help, not only for dullness but sometimes rougher texture. Experiment, experiment, before you paint. Painting all the suede parts at the same time as suggested is a very good idea.

Troy used Rust-oleum Fine Textured Black on his 68 Dart dash after I used the Rust-oleum Fine Textured Grey on my Minilite look-a-like rims.

I just use single stage paint and mix in a flattening agent. I bought a quart and use it for all kinds of stuff. You have to do a couple of tests until you figure out how much flattening you need.

The one I use is Dupont 4531S

If you get the amount correct it gives your paint the same texture as the factory suede paint.

Thanks for all the advice!! I finished it today and it came out great!!!! Nice even suede texture and perfect color!!

Heres what I did. After trying several methods, heres what worked best.
Used Valspar paint, matched to a OEM color chip.
Paint guy made it nice and flat.
Mixed it 1:1 at first.
Layed down several nice coats to get a nice dark color.
Then mixed about 1.5:1 and fogged it several times. This gave it perfect texture but would wipe off cause it was sprayed so dry, so, next I went back to 1:1 and layed down one more coat to lock it in.
After it cured overnight, nice texture and it is very durable.
Thanks for all the help again!!!

Now to reassemble dash!!!

Oh yeah, and BTW, cost......31 bucks for a quart vs 125/quart for "correct" paint.

I'm finishing up a 1970 E-body column for a member now. I have a local paint store that still has the original lacquer DDL formula. Took a couple of tries on my end to get the texture to where I feel is right . But once done it looks GREAT
