This is a newly rebuilt engine.

620ci with rons alchy injection.

We have made about 10 runs on the engine. And have changed the oil every second pass. The oil has a silvery metallic glitter to it when in the sun or light. No pieces in the oil but certainly a lot of glitter.

There is the same amount in it from the first time to the last time.

Engine has been running very well but im getting abit worried.

Pull the vavle covers and look at the springs... some
have a chrome plating on them and pull the pan and
check the bearings... dont wait till it stops suddenly

I really dont think it looks like bearing... But i did pull the pan after the 5th run and took 2 rod bearings off and they looked very good.

Its so weird its just like a mist of metallic in the oil... without light u cant see it but it is there!

Mine always has a silver tint to it every time I change the oil. Nothing big, just you can see a silver color in it when you stir it in the sunlight. I change my oil every 40 passes or so.

Piston skirts, valve train wear and just about everything else contribute to it IMO.

I worried about it at first but after about 350 passes at 7000 rpm if something was wrong I would have found it lol.

Check around maybe at the airport. We did oil analysis on engines out at the airbase. Sometimes we would "accidently" test someones motoroil. It will tell you exactly what your looking at.

I know that the cylinder walls were certainly rough for my liking. The last owner did not oil the engine every time after using and the alchy made some nice lines in the walls.... So skirt wear could be a big part of it.
This is my first big engine and i' just worried. My small engine never had oil that looked like this.

Engine spins close to 8000rpm

Try sticking a magnet in it to see what it is(ferrous
or non ferrous) material

Had it with my engine... it was aluminum from the rockers. I did not have enough lube up top due to a bering alignment issue and it wore through the aluminum rockers.

Pull the covers and check.

put a magnet in the oil..... There seems to be a small stream of darkness that goes towards the oil. The glitter is not affected by the magnet.

So does this mean i should worry or not?

Like i said i took the pan off around run 5 and looked at two bearings and they looked fine.

Skirts may be wearing since i saw the cylinder walls had some rough spots in them from the last owner not hibernating the motor properly after using alchy.

The rockers i could also see wearing a bit. The heads are b1-TS and they are T&D rockers. A lot of pressure on the side of the rocker which could be scrubbing on the side against the spacing washer that T&D recommends.

Hmmmm Same amount of glitter every two runs... no "pieces" or fragments in the filter but there is certainly a shine to the oil.....

What to do What to do?

Maybe its normal engine wear for this size? Almost a 5 inch stroke.... Lots of skirt wear maybe....

What brand and weight oil are you using? Some brands have a gold tint in them after using them, maybe some can have a silver tint Contact Chief Aircraft Supplys or Aircraft Spruce for oil analisis kits or googel oil testing, analysing the oil will really help identify the problem, real or not I use to use the kits after every other oil change(50 hours) on my airplane motor before it got totaled in a hail storm Long term use of the oil analysing will help identify trends versus sudden changes in wear

Are you sure that you did not run over Team Edward down on the return road?

Also are you running cups under your valve springs...
you might be eating up the heads with the springs

You could try Caterpillar for oil sample containers.I think there about $10 each and they do the analysis(sp) for you and then send you a report on what they find. You could try a truck dealership(peterbilt/kenworth) for the sample container for cat and then send in the sample.Just a suggestion

If the heads are indys with cast in spring locators pull the covers and take a good look at spring pockets. I had the same problem. Steel spring locators fixed it.

Does this motor have aluminum rods? They can contribute to that

I agree. Hard to tell without looking but there is always going to be a certain amount of metal in the oil after making runs. We used to use cut our filters apart and get worried. Now we just quit cutting. We take our motor apart about every 15-20 runs even with no outward sign of an issue-never have any serious bearing distress.
