Ok, my buddy's 340 has a tapping noise coming from the engine on the passenger side. He believes it is a bad lifter, and I think it might just be an exhaust leak.

If we remove the #4 plug wire it quiets down significantly.

Any suggestions?

Are there any other tests that we can perform?

The car runs great. Doesn't blow smoke. He is a little worried about it.

Just a little noisy on that one side.

Anybody?

Thanks!

Tim...

Sounds like an exhaust leak, a lifter would not go quiet with the plug pulled since the valve train is really not affected by something like that.

Thanks, John. My thought exactly.

He says he is not ready to do anything about it until Winter sets in.

Should he act on it immediately? Will he burn a valve, if he waits?

Yes, I believe that they are TTI.

We removed them three or four weeks ago to have some head work done, but this is the first that I noticed the noise.

I don't think he was able to put the original TTI header gaskets back on (they were messed up when the headers were removed).

He just installed the ones that came with the Felpro gasket kit.

It all adds up to a header leak...
