How do you use a vacuum guage to adjust the carb?

This is for an auto:

Prior Checks:
Timing must be correct first before tuning the carb.
Engine off: Check each metering screw to see how many turns outward they are. Then readjust all screws to make them the same.
For a reference, add a mark (permanent marker) on the metering screw head at 12:00 on each screw once they are all evenly adjusted.

- Engine must be at normal driving temp (street driven for apx 10-15 minutes).
- With engine running, tranny in D, emergency brake applied.
- Connect a vacuum gage to the engine and take note on the vacuum reading and the rpm of that vacuum reading. Note: If the vacuum reading fluctuates, take a note on the lowest to highest reading.
- Choose a metering screw and turn that one screw outward to the 11:00 o’clock position (reference your mark on the metering screw).
- Allow the engine to idle for apx. 20-30 seconds and take note of the new vacuum reading.
- If the vacuum reading got higher, then move to the next metering screw and readjust as previously suggested (11:00 o’clock position).
If the vacuum reading got lower, then move that metering screw inward to the 1:00 o’clock position (reference your mark on the metering screw).
- Allow the engine to idle for apx. 20-30 seconds and take note of the new vacuum reading.
- At this time you should be able to determine which direction to turn the metering screws to achieve the highest vacuum reading. Use this sequence on each of the metering screws (2 or 4 metering screws). Once you have adjusted all of the metering screws once as mentioned, then readjust your in-gear idle rpms as required.
- I would suggest that this adjusting sequence is done “twice” (two times around the carb) with the car in D to achieve the best in-gear idle vacuum reading. A steady vacuum reading at the preferred in-gear idle rpm should be the goal for a street driven car.

the same, just w it in neutral, back & forth to get the highest vac at your preferred idle rpm

I have a question for the 4 speeders. Since the auto should be tuned against the load (in D), do the 4 speeders (once the N idle is tuned for best vacuum) have to add an additional 1/8 turn outward on the metering screws or do you take care of the best lean idle by adding more pump shot?
I am not a 4 speeder but I am curious because I have to turn the primaries outward about an additional 1/10 of a turn from the best NEUTRAL idle settings to get my best in D idle vacuum settings.

Thanks!!!!

Only reason you do it in D with an auto is because when you're driving you're never at idle with zero load on the engine like with a 4sp at idle. With an auto you definitely want the idle in D to be good so you don't have issues when you're sitting at a stop light with cars lined up behind you...

I add a little on the fat side regardless (1/8-1/4 turn), since my ride runs warm and you never want to be too lean..

Otherwise this is exactly how I do it also...
