Hey All,

I was recently at the Mopar Nats and every year I love to stop whatever i am doing to run over to the track and see the F.A.S.T. cars run. I think the performance of these cars is simply amazing. This year one of the cars that impressed me was a standard 383 superbee that was running well into the 12's.

That being said, I am considering building an A-Body small black car to compete in the class. One of the things i noticed was that the two A-bodies that were competing at the Nats were both '70s.

I would like to build either a duster, demon or dart sport....basically the fastback body style. It seems the best combo would be a '71 because of the better exhaust manifolds coupled with the thermoquad....which i believe is a better choice for carb as it has bigger flow numbers.

Please give me your thoughts on what combo you think makes the most sense.

One thought was that the '73-'74 Dart Sport came with the dual snorkle single scoop fresh air hood....but the exhaust manifolds were more restrictive....correct?

I look forward to hearing from you all. Thanks.

There was a 72 Duster that competed with a 440ish cube smallblock , it only ran in that configuration for a race or 2 but it ran 11.50's out of the boxand had more in it. Can't remember his screen name, think it was cjk440 , Chris K. from Ct., he's not on much here lately.

I would think a 71 would be better as you get the hi flow exh manifolds AND a thermoquad which is bigger than the AVS on the 70.

the good part for you is the person with alot of input in the engine of that car is sort of local to you , Dan at Performance Only in West Palm.

The 70 B7 340 Duster you saw at the Nats is my little pure stocker. The butterscotch 71 belongs to F1scamp here on the board. 71-2 A bodies are the hot set up as they are a little lighter than the 3s and 4s.

Come on out and have some fun

Just out of curiosity why not build a big block A body? I would think a 67-69 fastback barracuda would be a good choice

Or how about a 69 Dart GT with a 440...?

Seeing how he asked about a F.A.S.T. build and GT darts didnt come with 440s you take a guess.

Sorry meant Dart GTS. They did have a 440 available from the factory. Seems like that would be the ticket to the largest cubes in the smallest package.

That was my original thought, but i figured a fastback barracuda would have more wieght over the rear

The challange with the big block A body is the driver side exhaust manifold.

Every car has it's downside. I think the problem with a big block A body is the above mentioned drivers manifold and the intake and carb suck. My opinion is that a small block would eat the big blocks lunch for way less money. Big block adds weight over the nose and stroke makes the manifolds worse.

Hope that doesn't deter anyone from building one.

I don't think the manifold is as bad as it seems , I'll find out how bad next year , at least on my pure stock 383 build , hopefully I get enough OT over the winter months to have the extra money to finish my low deck stroker , but it's basically a non competitive package , lousy intake and a small carb .

Also it's not as light as some think , my 69 383 GTS weighed 3605 in pure stock trim with a 190 lb driver .

I like the 71 cars but I am a little biased.

Never done a low deck based FAST motor but I am not convinced the right package won't outperform a SB.

I have accumulated extra parts to build either a pump gas or race gas FAST SB. At some point I will be putting it together and offering for sale here on moparts.

John, it's not a "non competitive package" it will be competitive with someone, just not the guy at the top.
