I drained the fluid to install a new locking dip stick in my TF 727 with 8" converter. It has a deep pan not stock. Specs say a stock 727 takes 9qts. I got 4 quarts in it and it started backing up the dip stick tube. I fired it up to get it warm and get it into the converter etc and I then added more but it still kept trying to back up the tube. I have 6 1/2 quarts in it but it keeps backing out the dip stick tube after I warmed it up a few times. It seems way over filled. Any chance the converter would keep 4 quarts in it while I drained the pan? I'm thinking about siphoning it out until it's correct on the dip stick tomorrow Worried I'll be low on fluid and hurt the tranny. What could happen with having too much fluid and running it? Any ideas, I'm open for suggestions. I'm stumped. Thanks

if you only drained the pain of its fluid, then thats all you need to replace, maybe 4 qts or less.

If you didn't(couldn't) drain the converter I think 6 quarts is enough, are you checking the fluid level in neutral with the motor running? IF not try that before draing anymore out of it. I run my trans with the Mopar deep steel pans at the add mark warm or below the add mark cold

Sounds like I over filled it, damn. With 6qts it backed up the tube. I ran it and got it nice and hot and then went to check it again and it puked all over as soon as I pulled the dip stick. Sounds like I'm at least 2qts over. Wonder if siphoning will be easier than removing the tranny blanket and dumping some out of the pan at this point. I feel like a real jack ass. ThanX for the dip stick reference and quart reference.

I know with a stock 727 pan, the stick reads full with 3 qts - cause I just did it.

I have an older steel deep pan so I think 3 or 4 quarts was what I should have added.

9 quarts would be right with a fresh transmission and converter. Just dropping the pan will get less than half the oil out.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I've had an air lock before and it would a ton of fluid all over the garage celing and wall when I shut it off

Looking back on it now I can but at the time I was

New trans and vert @ the time, called the place that sold it to me for help, they were no help.

Ended up cracking loose the return line on my fluid cooler to let the traped air escape, B I N G O

Never had this happen before & hasn't happened since

Maybe worth just my wierd experience and worth.

Hmmm I may just try this to see if I do have any trapped air because my gut feeling was that it was pressurizing. Can't hurt, thanX for the input roadhazard.

I was told by one of the trans builders to start it in neutral instead of park so it would pump all of the air out of it.
I don't know what difference it would make, maybe he was just having a laugh at my expense.
