What are your thoughts on flexable braided brake lines on the entire car for street applications? I am in the process of replacing the front brake hoses with these. I think it looks nicer and a more "perfprmance" look. So I am thinking of doing the entire front brake lines, then at a later point doing the whole car. Any thoughts?

be expensive for one...need to clamp down the line in many intervals..it would probably work...I never tried it...I use hard lines then the braided flex to the calipers from the chassis...

Lots of braided lines aren't DOT approved if that matters.

Talk to Mark Williams. When I did the disc brakes on my Race car they told me to keep the flexible line to under 3 feet for the whole car.

Keep the flexible lines as short as possible. Plumbing the whole car with flex lines would give you an expensive, spongy brake system.

Running all braided line will give you a slight spongy
pedal... its the expansion in the line itself

I run long braided lines to the calipers and the rear axle on my jeep. 7 years now with no trouble.

This is the best approach......replace all flexible line with braided and leave the hard lines as is.
They make some pretty stiff braided brake line , but nothing like solid tubing.

I thought the braided stuff helped you stop better as the hose wouldnt expand like the factory rubber hose and you would stop in a shorter distance. ..Phill

There is no doubt its better than rubber but it will still expand more than hard line. The ideal situation is hardline with as little flexable line as you can get away with. The lines on my jeep are pretty long to deal with all the suspension travel. I imagine if the flex lines were rubber it would affect petal feel for sure, about 40-48" of line between the three.

Wouldn't know....But I drive it almost every day. Lots of myths, but I have two street cars, both with braided lines.

My whole brake system is braided line... works fine
but it has a bit of a spongy pedal but not enough for
me to run steel line.... yet

I purchased about 8 short pieces of Earl's #3 braided line from Summite ( 4,6,8,18, inch ) to use for the oiling system on the engine I am building. Every piece of line has a sticker " not for highway use " but yet they offered braided line brake kits for about every car known to man. If you ask me they are just covering their butt.

Some are DOT approved but the OP wants to replace all of his hardline with braided. I did this once like Mike has his but eventually changed it and got a much firmer peddle.

Personally, I would never plumb the entire braking system with braided hose, especially on a street car. Hold a plumbed braided brake line in your hand while someone else depresses the brake pedal. You can feel and see it expand. Imagine that amount of expansion over many feet of hose. Don't compromise your braking system. Forget the cool factor, hard line it, except for where there is suspension movement.

Here are some DOT approved ones

What the difference is, I don't know.

I am replacing the rubbers now, with DOT approved braided line. I have good metal lines now. Just a thought of plumbing the whole car, guess it would not be a great idea.

I am not yet convinced that SS braided line expands less then factory OEM type rubber brake lines. I would concede that SS braided lines look nicer and likely tolerate rock, etc debris contact better. Would like to see some emperical data first before I jump on that band wagon.

I also suspect DOT specs maybe costly and are mainly to cover ones butt as per lawyer advice, since not meeting DOT sopecs inidicates? off road use. I also thought I read somewhere they are never DOT approved, just meet DOt Specs

AndyF, this is a mag article in the making
