The green Superbird with the black nose two pictures up is NOT the one Scott Spirakes owns. I thought it might be but he didn't think so when I talked to him about it.

St Louis 1982... Returning from a day out at the Mid-America race track. Picture was taken from the FE5 red Hemi `Cuda, and shows two more Hemi cars and a wing car on the exit ramp. I believe that Ken, the passenger in the B5 Hemi GTX, took a similar picture about 30 seconds later... but I have not found it.

The attached picture was one of six 8x10 enlargements that I found today... I will post a couple more tomorrow of the 6 BBL vs. 8 BBL showdown on I35 in southern Oklahoma...

Here is brief description of the encounter from an earlier post near the beginning of the thread:

Quote:

On I-35 in southern Oklahoma, we are over-taken by a 440 "Six Pack" equipped 1969 GTX owned by a guy from Fort Worth who had attended the St Louis meet. His GTX had "highway gears", and he was cruising faster than the "10 over" we were running... and he wanted to play! Without a CB , cell phone, or other communications... our first sign of trouble was seeing a Rallye Red streak approaching, followed by the out-gunned GTX. But, the GTX had a trump card, road gears (2.76 or 3.23?)... while the `Cuda had 4.10s. And the GTX owner seemed ready to keep trying, regardless of speeding tickets, car impound risks, or dangers of running 120+ on I-35.

When they first blew by, I ran the GTX up to about 100 to "say hello" to our new friend, but quickly decided that I wanted to retain possession of the GTX... so I just as quickly backed back out of it. The `Cuda played with him for a couple goes at it, but then wisely backed on out too. He saw that the cards were stacked against him, and it wasn't worth getting the `Cuda impounded or breaking the Hemi. The acceleration differential had been demonstrated, now it was endurance differential's turn!

I remember having 4-5 pics of the encounter, but so far have found only this one showing the `Cuda & GTX closing up on Ken and I... hopefully I will find the others soon.

In the attached picture, the 440 GTX has just overtaken the Hemi `Cuda, and sails by with all six barrels singing... The B5 Hemi GTX that I am driving is way up ahead, and Ken & I are unaware of what is just starting.

Like many motorheads, the owner of the Hemi `Cuda goes into "OH YEAH?!?" mode... In this photo as seen from the B5 GTX, the Hemi `Cuda has eight barrels singing, and the TX9 Black GTX has dropped in line behind it for passing the B5 GTX. As stated in the earlier post, this was first time we became aware of the encounter starting... this is a repost of the earlier photo.

In this photo, taken at some point in the skirmish, the two cars are lining up again for another go at it...

Here is the other shot to show that your Charger did not have a gold colored hood scoop...

Its gotten kinda quiet in the thread... is every getting tired of St Louis 1982 pics, and would you rather Indy 1984 pictures instead? Or is everyone getting bored with the 25+ year old pictures...?

For now, another St Louis 1982 pic... 1970 Hurst Chrysler 300 convertible...

Allen, thanks for posting the picture of the blue mild custom Challenger. Thats a car I owned for about 10 years. It was a 1974 360 car. It was candy apple blue. This was my first Mopar Nationals. I drove the car form Columbus Ohio to St Louis. The car behind it was mine also. It was a 76 Volare' with a 340 4 spd (sleeper). My sister followed me out in the Volare'. We all camped out because we didn't have enough money to stay in a hotel! Thanks for the memories! Gerry.

Thanks for the reply Gerry... It seems a fair number of St Louis 1982 Alumni are on Moparts. Let me know if you want a higher resolution version of the picture, and I will keep an eye out for your car in other pics.

As far as trip expenses, I and the rest of the group for San Antonio had similar funding issues. I saved for about 4-5 months for the trip, but realized that I was going to be running short by trip time. So, I did what I had to (but did not want to...), and sold my 1969 383 Charger to fund the trip. In addition to providing the funding for the trip, the sale funded other related expenses like the $125-$150 that I spent on film & processing on the trip pictures... Although I still miss the Charger which was the second Mopar that I owned, it still was the right call at the time.

Here is a pic of the Charger that I had to sell...

Its the "not-quite-stock" 1969 Road Runner featured in several magazines and newsletters of the day.

Allen, if you find any more pictures let me know. I would love to have a nice picture of that car. I only had an istant camera back in the day so any pictures I have were not that great. That was my first Mopar Nationals and I have not missed one since.

Trying that picture again... I just realized that the Superbird is probably the blue one in a parking lot picture (see inset pic)... converted it the best that I could quickly.

Here are two new pics of the Papas Dodge towing solution at the 1982 CCCC in St Louis. I cannot locate the prints, but found these images that appear to be photos of the prints on an old 386 PC that I still have up & running.

I am currently researching my options for getting reprints from the old negatives, and hope to get the process started in the next few weeks... very limited options locally so far. Most local stores send the negatives to a central lab, often out-of-state. SnapFish has their photo negative scanning done in India...

Here is Papas Dodge 1971 Six Pack Charger R/T tow vehicle... and apparently cargo carrier also, look at the open trunk!

#19 1970 Hemi Cuda convertible. Former Paul Sulof car I believe.

And later owned by Carlos Montiverdi and then Bill Wiedman ?
I believe I have the original windshield out of this car, and it still has the National Hemi owners decal on passenger side bottom corner.

Thanks, I did not recall that. If anyone watching this thread recognizes one of the pictured cars, and knows its history or what became of it in the 28 years since the St Louis (or other early Mopar Nats) meet, please chime in and let us know. No need to give specific owner info if you do not want to, but general info about the car and what city or state it lives on in...

XS

The car is still alive and well with the same owner,
and as mentioned one of my dream cars I would like to own some day. But I don't think it will ever happen.
