I measured from the post on the unit to the bare metal of the unit and got very high readings.

I also measured from the terminals on the back of the autometer gauge, through the wires to the unit and got very high readings.

The readings were "backwards" meaning I had a lower resistance at empty than at full. Th book says I should have a lower reading at full than empty.

The values were in the 790Kohm range to an open circuit range when full.

Supposed to be 33ohms empty and 8ohms or so full.

should be 12 ohms to 73 ohms.
if you got kohms throw it out.

Positive on the stud, neg on the fuel outlet tube. swing the arm through the motions.

I assume you are using a stock fuel level sender with an autometer gauge designed for that range? Just making sure!

Actually the autometer gauge in the car is wrong for a stock sender. It is a 2320. I think it is supposed to be a 2315. however, it is wired correctly and not measuring anything, so I wanted to verify the resistance of the circuit.

I think the sender, aftermarket or stock, is bad. The 2320 takes a 3625 sender or something. Not stock.

+/- 1 on the lower ohm reading

+/- 10 on the higher ohm reading

haynes manual states 10 to 70 though

try adding another ground from the swinging arm to the rest of the filler body, then check the resistance measurements again. (A simple wire with alligator clips would be fine for testing)

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

http://www.autometer.com/productPDF/0994A.pdf

The 2320 is for a 240 ohm empty, 33 ohm full sender (p/n 3632). That being said, you might want to check out the info for the PDF above, if nothing else, it will give you the normal ranges for all makes/fuel sender ohm ranges. Plus if you belly up and shell out for some of the newer/nicer full sweep electric autometer gauges you can program them for any fuel sender out there! Hope that helps. Good luck!
