I'm getting ready to restore my 69 Roadrunner and I'm planning on painting the underside of the car the factory Ralley Green. My car DID NOT come with a factory rubber undercoat.

How did these cars (no undercoat) look underneath from the factory? It doesn't seem like they would have taken the time to paint the underside.

Just wondering....thanks.

You should be able to easily dig up some pics of 'factory correct' restos. Basically the underside was primered and the only color it got was where overspray from painting the body got onto the primer on the underside. I'm not a big fan of the look, I prefer undercoating or full body color paint underneath but if you want factory correct...

They were originally dipped in a dark gray primer that had drips in the floorpans. Then only green overspray from the rocker panel would have ended up there. Then any undercoating in the wheelwells would have had overspray in areas around the edges.

I had the bottom of my dart painted to replicate the factory primer dip + overspray look. I had the paint store mix up some flattened grey paint to match the grey primer and then had the body color (sublime in this case) half-hazardly fogged around the outside. It's not a mint restoration like some of the stuff on here, but it came out pretty nice for a car that will be driven on the street.

I thought about leaving the ppg dp epoxy primer on it and painting the body color over top, but the paint store guy said the epoxy is water resistant, but not water proof forever and long term I'd be way better off sealing it with paint.

It's not really epoxy anymore is it? I think the current equivalent to the DP epoxy primer is labeled something like DLP or DCC and is a urethane and is OK for the underneath especially with a few good fairly heavy coats? Maybe Paul could clarify it?

PPG's epoxy primer is called DPLF now, iirc. The LF is for lead free???

DCC is urethane single stage ppg paint, and not a primer.

A few more for reference: original undercarraige from a 69 Lynch Road road runner.

Does any one know why the factory put the little rectangular splash of undercoat under the rear seat on both sides of the drive shaft? It doesn't really seem functional?
